What is it that makes the skin on the bottom of our feet get harder as we age? I am 33 and I never go barefoot and I moisturize often, yet I am noticing this change in my skin there. Could it be a nutrient deficiency?

Yes, as we age our digestive system is less effective at extracting nutrients from our food. Also, if you have had any changes in your diet, that may be reflected in your skin. I.e., if you now eat leaner meat, you get less fat in your diet than before. Fat intake has an impact on the skin's softness and moisture level. Also, if you do a lot of walking or standing, that can cause the skin on the feet to dry out and become harder. One idea is to try rubbing some flaxseed oil or evening primrose oil on your feet daily to see if that helps soften them up a little. And a general multi-vitamin taken once daily, and/or digestive enzymes with meals will improve your nutritional status. Sulfur and silica are two minerals needed for healthy skin, and vitamin E and A are needed as well.

Take care,

If your heels and big toe are developing a "callus" that is an indication that your body is dehyrated. Are you drinking your 8 glasses of water a day? It really is important to be doing this. It helps your entire body stay healthy. Within a week or two you should start to get softer skin on your feet. Good Luck...
