I'm 25 years old, and have had bunions for as long as I can remember. I'm scheduled for bunion surgery next month and was wanting to know what people's experiences have been like since I'm pretty scared about the whole thing. Also a friend who has had it done before say that I should have both feet done at the same time to avoid having to undergo the surgery again and prolonging the recovery time another 6-8 weeks while my podiatrist say I should do one foot at a time. What do you think? Please reply!! Thanks!

I had bunion surgery done on both feet at the same time when I was 17 yrs. old. If I were to do it again, I would have both done at the same time for it would save time and money I think. ~BUT, unfortunately my surgery didn't work out and I still have the bunions on both feet and my feet still hurt sometimes and I can only wear certain shoes. I don't know what happened nor why this didn't turn out right but I did everything I was supposed to do, it just didn't work. I am now 34 yrs. old and my mother still wants me to go back and redo this, but there is ~NO~ way whatsoever I will go through this again. Good Luck to you!

Thanks so much for replying! So both feet simultaneously? How was the recovery? What was the most difficult aspect to deal with? And what was the anesthesia like? Gosh, I hate my bunions. They're not only ugly, they hurt so much! I am having a professor at a podiatry school do the surgery so I am hoping that the surgery will work. She says because of the laxity in my feet I will have to wear orthotics for the rest of my life to avoid recurrences. Yuck!

Jen,
Yes, I had them both done and if I were to do it again it would be the same way for I would rather go through it all at the same time than seperately. The anesthesia was as I remember a little uncomfortable at first, I lost count of how many shots they had to give me in each foot *everywhere*! But this is also 15 yrs. ago just to remind you, I am not sure how they go about everything now. When the doc had preformed the surgery on one foot then preceded to go to the other one my anesthesia had worn off some and he started cutting into my other foot without making sure first. This was very painful. I am sure though had it not been for his mistake in this everything would have went great! I had to wear these special shoes for 6 weeks while heeling. I did all of this and the surgery did no good for me for I still have bunions on both feet http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif I sometimes think about going and redoing the surgery but am too scared to do it again and have figured I am 34 now and if I have lived with it this long then I might as well live with them the rest of my life even though my feet hurt like the dickens sometimes after walking or standing on them too long and I can only wear a certain kind of tennis shoes to be comfortable in. I don't know mabey i will get the nerve up to do this again one day~ Being as this is 15 yrs. later that you are doing this I think you will do perfectly fine and hope all goes well for you! Good luck!

Hi..
I just had bunion surgery on my right foot on 12/15/00 I too was in pain for years before doing this.. If I had to have both feet done I too would want to do it all at once..The worst part of the whole surgery was having to be housebound. I had a cast on for 2 weeks and now just an ugly post surgery shoe..It has already been 3 weeks since surgery and the pain has never been real bad..just the inconvenience of crutches is a pain. But, I don't know how you would be able to get to the bathroom with both feet hurting. I had gotten used to walking with the cast, now it is off and I have to get used to walking again. I have a pin still in.It comes out in 2 weeks! Good Luck!
