My understanding is that cells in our body mutate. Usually, our immune systems sense that cells are mutating and destroy them. Sometimes, however, the immune system is unable to destroy the mutated cell, and it keeps dividing, creating more mutated cells. When the cluster gets big enough is usually when we discover a lump or something that indicates cancer.
Various things can make the cells mutate. Exposure to carcinogens (cancer-causing toxins) such as smoke, asbestos, chemicals, heavy metals, etc. can cause cancer. There is also frequently a strong heredity factor, meaning one's cells can be pre-disposed to mutate based on family history.
Because there are so many different types of cells in our body, there are many different types of cancer. The different types of cells each mutate in their own way; thus it is extremely difficult to design one treatment that will work for all types of cancer.
The best one can do to prevent cancer at present is to eat a healthy diet with a large variety of foods, ESPECIALLY fruits and vegetables, exercise, and avoid known carcinogens such as cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, etc.
