I am sitting here at work getting really uncomfortable. I can hardly sit--I feel like i need to stretch my torso up to relieve discomfort. I have my trigger tonight, retreival friday. Is this normal? I have felt discomfort and bloated for days, but this is another level. I will check with my dr but thought I would check with all of you too.

Hi Marie,
I'm sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. :( I never experienced OHHS, but it does sound like maybe you are having some symptoms. I think it would be a good idea to call your dr. And remember to stay hydrated.
Keep us posted & good luck!

Thanks Holly. I phoned and the nurse said discomfort is normal. If I get real extended or short of breath that is a concern. I got up and walked around, which helped. I might have to head home b/c sitting at my desk is not comfy. My concern isn't the discomfort as it is OHHS, but I guess if the office says it is OK it is. Doesn't my trigger shot stimulate me even more?

Hi Marie, I was quite uncomfortable myself before trigger. I was actually crying on the way to the RE the day before trigger b/c I felt so weird, and the u/s they did that day and the following were def on the painful side.
You are correct that the trigger is what fuels the hyperstimulation... supposedly you can't truly experience OHSS unless you do the trigger. Does your RE have you doing 10,000 units of hcg or 5000? My RE had me only do 5,000 b/c I was at a higher risk of developing OHSS. The good news is, I am 4 days post trigger and 2 days post E/R and I feel GREAT! Still bloated, but otherwise no problems (such as the shortness of breath and sudden weight gain). My RE has me tracking my weight daily, and I do that once in the morning and once at night... you might want to do that starting tomorrow since you do trigger tonite. Also, Holly is right... stay hydrated.... try to get some Smartwater since it has electrolytes... those electrolytes are good to fend off the OHSS.
Good luck, and try not to worry... think about the baby you are about to create!

Thanks Kari. I did just re-read your post on your recent trigger etc, so that helped me feel better. It even hurts when I start to walk, but then subsides some. I also sent an email to the two nurses who have been monitoring me at the dr office (OK, so yes, I am getting a little worried), just to make sure they are well aware of my situation (I am not sure who I spoke to on the phone). They didn't have me go in for an u/s or blood work today. Yesterday my estradiol (sp) was 1803. I will be up there tomorrow for DH's sperm retrieval. I am not sure how much trigger I am taking--I am mixing a powder and a liquid--1CC total. I don't own a scale. Guess I should get one. I am too uncomfortable to focus at work right now so maybe I will go get some proper hydration. I am positive, just worried.

Hi Marie,
I just wanted to check in and see how you were feeling. I'm glad you called the dr's office and they don't seem concerned. It sounds like as long as you are not experiencing shortness of breath or rapid weight gain, everything is okay. Of course, it still sucks that you are uncomfortable. :( If you are having trouble focusing at work, can you go home? Maybe it would do you good to just put your feet up and relax. Along w/ the water, I would suggest eating food w/ lots of protein. That is supposed to help fend off the OHHS.
Wishing you all the best! Try to keep those positive thoughts.

Thanks for check in Holly. I am home now. I bought a bunch of gatorade and changed into my most comfy clothes. I am working at the computer standing--it feels better when I am standing, but best lying down on back with knees bent. The head nurse responded to my email and she second the first nurse that this is normal. She said we can touch base tomorrow AM when I am up there with DH. I wasn't sure what was normal discomfort since it is my first time. I am sure that varies for each person. Just taking me by surprise.
It is the next morning and I wanted to add that I am feeling better. back to "normal" bloating and discomfort. I think sitting at a desk for that long didn't help and perhaps drinking all that gatorade was just what I needed! Thanks for the advice.

Hi Holly,
My DH's procedure went fine, but the results weren't as good as we were hoping. The samples still show rare nonmotile sperm (I am pretty sure rare means low count). It is possible for them to "wake up", which is why we are doing the E/R tomorrow. It is also possible to fertilize an egg with nonmotile sperm (why we are doing ICSI), but again, it wasn't what we wanted to hear b/c we still don't know their viability. We will know more tomorrow, and from what I gather online here, even more on Saturday (folks hear about success of fertilization the next day, right?).
When we got home, my DH said he is happy, he loves me, he loves us, he loves our dog (can't forget about her!). I never take that for granted.

Hi Marie,
I'm glad the procedure went well but sorry to hear the results were not what you were hoping for. I think your DH has a great attitude though & it is refreshing to know you don't take each other for granted!! :D :D You two are going to make wonderful parents!
I really don't know much about the sperm issues, but it is very interesting to hear that his sperm may "wake up" by tomorrow. I am sure the ICSI will help a great deal too. I really believe you will have some viable embryos to work with!!! And I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed too, just in case. ;)
You are right that you usually get a fertilization report the day after e/r. I have heard that some dr's make you wait an extra day, so double check w/ your dr so that you know what to expect - it would be really frustrating if you expected the call all day and then didn't get it.
Good luck w/ e/r tomorrow!!!! I'll be thinking of you! Can't wait to hear how many eggs they get! :D :D This is the exciting part!

Thanks everyone for thinking of me. I am back at home now resting on the couch. Everything went very smooth this morning. I was less nervous than I was yesterday for my DH's procedure, but still nervous. DH came in with me (he wasn't sure if he should--we are both very glad he did!), I couldn't stop asking questions and kept asking things even as I was falling asleep (I asked the nurse what soap she was washing me with--what the heck was I thinking??? I don't remember asking that, but it made my DH laugh). They retreived 16 eggs. My DH said it tooked 3 minutes. AND, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, some of my DH's sperm were motile this morning! Yippy! Not many, but even a few make us so very excited. We will hear if they were able to fertilize tomorrow. Pppppppplease! This is the first we have really felt excited and we are trying not to get our hopes up, but we can't help it. We just want to know that this is an option for us.
They do have me on a new injection b/c they are concerned that I will overstimulate. They said they give it to anyone who has over 15 eggs. Has anyone heard that? I can't help but think it is b/c they upped my gonal f dose so high to try to get me in before the conference.

Marie, congrats!!! I am so happy the e/r went well and also to hear about the motility of DH's sperm!!! A sign of good things to come!!!! My doctor had them administer a drug during e/r as well to fend off ohss. Don't recall the name but am certain it started with an "a", like ambum or something. Between that and the never ending flow of smartwater something must be working cause I feel GREAT!!! I hope you are just as lucky! Good luck with the fert report and I am thrilled things are going so well thus far!

I know you are trying not to get your hopes up. ;) I'm just so happy that things are finally going your way!!
When I went through IVF, they retrieved 26 eggs (only 13 were mature), and they never even mentioned the possibility of OHHS to me. I guess all dr's have their own protocols. I didn't overstimulate though, and I am hoping you will be just as lucky.
Can't wait to hear the fertilization report tomorrow!!! :blob_fire :bouncing: :blob_fire

Awesome news on the fertility front...got a call from my RE this morning. In the end 13 of the 16 eggs were mature. They attemped fertilization via ICSI with all and as of this morning 4 were fertilized. That isn't as many as what might be ideal (especially since we are doing a 5 day transfer), but what was most important to DH and I was hearing that his sperm were able to fertilize my eggs!!! We are so happy we both had a happy cry this morning. We have been wondering this for the 12 years!!! And all of the sperm they used for ICSI were motile!!!! No tests before have ever showed motile sperm! We realize this may be a long journey for us, but at least we now know it can be our journey! We are so happy. Also, they did say that the other ICSI eggs are not abnormal or degenerative so that they are going to watch them and they may fertilize as well. So, maybe we will have more than four. Again, for us this was our big step and we are going to celebrate tonight.
Yippy!

I am actually still pretty uncomfortable. Things haven't become worse, but I wish I was feeling better. It is uncomfortable to walk and I am experiencing pain in my....well....butt area. I am not sure if I am constipated (I did see many folks get that when taking progesterone), or just the bloatedness putting pressure in that area.

OK, so here is the update from the lab. No more eggs fertilized, but out of the four that did, three look good, one is fair. Two have moved past the cell stage (not sure exactly what that means), and two are 6-8 cell stage. The keeper of the embryos says she feels good that some (but maybe not all) will make it until Wed. She won't be checking them tomorrow b/c, as she put it, "it is their day of rest." I am cautiously optimistic that we will have our two (which is what we plan to put in) on Wed.
Feeling a bit better today! Got my gatorade next to me here at work.

Oh my, reading your two posts makes me so excited!
If we get more than two, the question of how many to put back is still a little under consideration, but DH and I have always thought two. When I woke up from E/R, DH and RE had discussed 3 and DH said RE is totally supportive/recommends either. Our thoughts on 2 is that it is our first time and my age (I am 32, almost 33, DH 36). I welcome hearing all of your thoughts though! I need to look into the likelihood of triples. I know it is WAY low, but our RE does have photos with three babies in his office, and I am not sure if I could handle that. Meanwhile, I would love twins. Again, please share your thoughts...maybe I will do a 2 or 3 transfer post (I hate to get ahead of myself though....I am so cautious and feel like I might jinx it when i think ahead...maybe I will just search past posts on the subject ;-)).
Transfer is scheduled for 2PM on Wed. If you don't recall from my previous post, I am the one waiting for my RE to come back from the conference....ugh! He kept telling us that 5-day is preferred, so we are just focusing on that rather than if today or tomorrow would have been the day if he wasn't away.

Marie, Yay your embies are doing great. I too have heard that day 4 is when all embryologists (embie keepers) leave them alone so you are in great shape.
I am older than you 34 but I transferred 3 on my first try and 5 on my second try. I think if you have 2 strongs ones on day 5, your chances are allready pretty high for twins since blasts have a higher chance of becoming viable pregnancies. Good Luck with your decision, I can't wait until Wed to hear how it all goes. I hope you are feeling better. AimeeM

Hi Marie,
I'm glad to hear you are getting excited!! :D I'm not sure what to "suggest" as far as how many to transfer back. It's definitely a decision both you and DH would have to be comfortable with. I'll just tell you what we did w/ our cycle. We did a day 3 transfer, and we put back 3 embies. I did get a positive pg test, but none held on. I believe the chances for triplets is extremely low, but it is there nonetheless.
Wishing you all the best!!

Aimee, did you do a 3 or 5 day transfer?
In searching online, it does seem like 2 (some say 1) is recommended for a 5-day b/c 5-day are supposed to have a higher pregnancy rate. I am still leaning towards 2, if we have them.
In doing the research online, I was reminded of the risks of pushing it to 5 days. And all the back and forth on what is best--3 day or 5? It seems even if you have strong looking embies on day 3, some just don't make it until 5 (I did just lean that my embies got put into a new culture today...I like to know what is going on with them). Most places don't recommend proceeding with 5 day unless you have at least 5 good looking embies on day 3, preferably more than that. We only have three. Ugh, ugh. Also, most on this board have done a three day. What a roller coaster this is!! But, I have to think positively for my embryos!

Hi Marie! So happy to hear your embies are looking so good!!! Just one more day till they are back to where they belong and will stay for nine long months!!! I think it's great u are doing a day five transfer. I really wish my RE hadn't gone to that conference so I could have had that option. As for how many to transfer, I have heard that putting back three significantly raises risk of twins but odds of trips is quite small (like Holly said). But if they see two perfect looking embies on day five I think putting back two will keep your chances of pregnancy very high!!! Hope your embies keep growing strong and u continue to feel well!

The embryologists says 2 are absolutley beautiful, 1 is just as beautiful but needs one more day, and the other is definitely in the running but has smooth edges rather than rough edges, which makes it less desirable. Hi gals! Well I am back at home and all went well. We did decide on two even though the dr definitely would have done three, but we feel really good about our decision. It is so wonderful to have them at home and we are going to send them LOTS of LOTS of love so they settle in. If the third one continues to look good tomorrow they will freeze it. The valium they gave me did nothing--I was too excited. At the end (couldn't believe how quick it was!) our dr held our hands and said just relax, relax, relax now. They turned the lights down and left us, but my mind was running w/excitement. I am not on bedrest, but was told that rest and relaxation were to be my focus the next few days. PT scheduled for Oct 26th.
