I'm just a newbie here mbeth but from what I've read here this past week - no you should not be on actonel for osteopenia and no you cannot take them together.

I would respectfully suggest that you read some of the threads here - very, very information about Actonel, Fosamax, Forteo & Strontium.

Hi mbeth, welcome  to the board. I have a few questions for you...did your dr. give you a copy of your DEXA scores? If not, ask for a copy to be sent to you and post them. Are you thru menopause yet? I'm guessing your 50, right? Do you have risk factors for osteo? thin frame, family history, other conditions?

If it were me in the osteopena stage i wouldn't take any of the meds now available. As pepurr mentions..read, read, read. the better informed you are the better decison you can make. Since you are in the ospeopenia stage you can do things to help your bones without meds...weight bearing exercises, calcium from dairy and non dairy foods, supplements and keeping active. Also read the book the Myth of Osteoporosis by Gillian Sanson...its loaded with good info that isn't in some of the other books. I personally take strontium and am happy with the results i've gotten from it.

there are a lot of smart people on this board, you'll get good advice and the support you need. take care...phyllis

Thanks for your replies...I have spent the past week.after work and on weekends....reading and researching. When I first told my endocronologist I didn't want to be on the first prescribed drug "boniva" She told me I was reading too much and would be hunched over if I didnt take it and could break a hip. She scared the life out of me. BUT now ater more researching and after two weeks on Actonel...I decided no more!! I am 56...not even a year yet since last period and am awaiting my DEXA scores in the mail!
I asked her last night about Stronium but she said she read no research to report its benefits and its just a mineral and I could take it hours after the Actonel. I am going to try Adacal calcium now, soy isoflavones, strontium and add why, prunes, sage and only def coffee to my diet. Yes a lot of reading. I do exercise a lot and have now added ankle weights.
I dont have the risk factors for osteoporosis except "have lost 10 lbs or more" more than twice in my life, prolonged Advair for asthma and mild hypothyroidism (on low dosage of Synthroid)
I am buying that book too.
Has anyone here built up bone density without prescribed meds???

Hi mbeth...after a year on strontium my bone density inceased somewhere in the 3% to 3.5% range. so it does work and there have been studies done to show that it does. Your dr. hasn't done much research on it or she would've read that. I also walk daily, weight train, take supplements and try to eat a good healthy diet..hey, i'm not perfect...hahaha. I think you could improve your scores, which aren't that bad for the most part, without meds. have a good weekend, we're off to go camping. Take care..phyllis
