At my DS's 4 month check up, I asked the ped about using generic formula. We use Enfamil Lipil and he done wonderful on it. I asked her about using the Target brnd and she said they they were pretty much the same thing and it would be fine to use ut. Well we switched and my DS became horribly constipated. He was grunting a lot and just very uncomfortable. We went back to using the regular Enfamil and after 3 days, we have finally gotten him regular again. Is this normal? Should we just stick with the regular formula or does it take some time for him to get used to it? I just assumed that it would be the same and he wouldn't know the difference. I would love to be able to use to generic to try and save some money but I don't want to use it if it is going to make him miserable.

Did you wean him onto it or just switch all of a sudden? It can cause minor digestive upsets if you change abruptly. They're essentially the same but there are minor differences, like fat soure, that sort of thing. Try gradually changing it and see if he takes to it better that way. Another good generic choice would be Parent's Choice, which also makes a gentle formula. :)

If you read the label, generic is exactly the same as the name brand formula. We've used Parent's Choice for over 4 month with no problems. I agree with the previous post that you need to gradually switch. His constipation most likely would have happened if you suddenly switched to any formula, name brand or generic. Just slowly introduce the new and he should be ok.

I too used Parent's Choice with my DD when WIC checks would run out for the month. I didn't have to wean her or anything, but you may have to with your son. In case you aren't sure, Parent's Choice is Walmart brand. Good luck! I am sure you will be able to make the switch and save money. ;)
