View Full Version : DS not himself

Hi everyone.
Well last night my 2 month old DS was not himself. I knew something was wrong though my family thought I worry way too much. But he was not himself at all. He was really cranky, wouldn't eat, couldn't be consoled, was tired but wouldn't sleep, his eyelid was really red and swollen and his eye was leaking alot, and had a fever. So we went to the hospital and we were admitted for the night. His fever went down without any medication after about 5-6 hours. It was in the mid 100's but not up to a point that he needed any medication yet. Then this morning his eyelid was back to normal. The doctor told me that he will probably run a bit of a fever tonight but to wait it out at home until/or if it gets to the high 100's low 101. Although I was told by my doc to go into the hospital at 99.5. Anyway we have been home all afternoon and now his eye is starting to swell again this last hour. They did a bunch of blood work last night and took x-rays and swabs. The doc today told me that the swab of his eye wouldn't be ready until late tonight early tommorow to see if there is an infection. I don't want to go back to the hospital if I can help it but I don't know what is wrong with my son. I have only had 2 hours sleep. I kept dreaming in that time that my son was allergic to fish? Weird. I have an appointment with my doc tomorrow so I feel a little better. So my question is this. Could my son be allergic to something at home? If so why does it kick in at night? Could it be an eye infection? Could it be something else? Has anyone experinced anything like this? He has had a blocked tear duct since birth but has not had this reaction before. Is this just a result of the blocked tear duct? Thanks everyone, Sherri :)

It could be that the tear duct has gotten infected. I hope the doctor can help you out tomorrow. Good luck and I hope he feels better soon.

thanks for answering my question by the way...but i don't know if you've gotten your sons mistery solved or not yet but did you ever think of pink eye? just a suggestion. but my daughter had a blocked tear duct at birth as well. shes seven almost eight months now and it just cleared up. out of the blue one day last month. i'm so glad too it was so yucky on some days, real yellow and gooie. anyways i don't know how they do it in canada but my daughters doctor here said if it didnt clear up by one year old they'd put a probe in it! so thank goodness it gone. good luck with his and keep massaging it! also her blocked tear duct didn't cause any of those problems so i'm sure its something else wrong with him. i've also heard of a 'cold' in the eye. it could of just been that.

I think it could definitely be the blocked duct... I'm not sure about the fever though, but the swelling definitely. My ds had a blocked duct from the time he was born (he's now just over 5 months) and it was TERRIBLE. Although he'd only have it off and on (it would be extremely dischargy and swollen for like a week at a time, then it would be fine for 2 weeks then he'd have it again) when it was "on" it would sometimes get so swollen he could barely open his eye. My father in law told us to put a cold tea bag on his eye for a minute or so in the morning and at night, and it really helped with the swelling. It didn't help at all with the discharge however, but the swelling dissapeared almost immediately when we would take the tea bag off. So you could try that--just make sure you squeeze all the water out really well before putting it on, and then try to keep it on there for about a minute (if he'll lie still). I believe the blocked duct is now cleared in my ds because he hasn't had any swelling or discharge for over a month now, and prior to this, it hadn't been "off" for that long a period. So I'm pretty happy about that! But yeah.... I hope your ds is okay! Let us know how the appointment goes...
