View Full Version : I'm going for MAV prevent meds

Next week, I am meeting with my primary care doc to discuss starting a migraine preventative. I know I'll most likely have to educate him further that abortives don't work for MAV.

Anyone on migraine preventative meds for MAV please let me know what you're on and what, if any, side effects you may have experienced. I'm hoping for something like verapamil or propanolol, but concerned that my blood pressure is usually on the lower/normal side that this might not be a good match.

I'm willing to try most anything-except Topomax right now (topomax scares me!!). And, unfortunately, Pitozifen is not available in the US. I am currently on Celexa (citalopram) 20mgs and am at about 90-95% of my "normal" after battling a very BAD bout of anxiety this summer.

Any other pointers would be appreciated.

I will beat this thing, and I have learned that I am the ONLY one who can speak up and get it done.
This squeaky wheel must get the grease, even if it has taken a while to get it!!!

wannarun,

Please let us know what MAV preventative meds you will be taking once you find out as I will most likely be taking this path one day. Good luck!

Howie,
When you say "minor blip" what does that mean for you-some head pressure or off balance feeling or full vertigo?

WhyamIDizzy,
I will let you know what I get and how successful, or not, it is.

Good luck Wannarun. I don't blame you for staying away from the topomax. Please keep us updated on your progress; I'm crossing my fingers for you. How are you feeling with the AD? Do you think it has helped you some?

Minor Blip... Some minor very minor symptoms like headpressure nausea dizziness.. Just like if you have IBS and you get some stomache cramps..There is no cure ..The preventative manages the symptoms . Last time I had symptoms wa also a seasonal change . Winter to spring. That is my trigger like some is food or caffeine.

Gloria,
thanks for the luck! Yes, I do feel the AD has helped-I am doing so much more than I was at this time last year even-with the kids, errands etc. I am not sure if it has helped the MAV, but it could have just made me more relaxed about it-so I guess in that way it has!
I am really eager to answer someone who asks that I am doing great...right now I'm managing quite well, so I cannot complain. I guess it's the perfectionist in me!

Howie,
Thanks for the info. I hope the blip ends soon for you. So glad to hear it's a minor one. Wish there was a cure, but to have the majority of the time at 99-100% sounds wonderful!

I agree . There is no cure but If you can manage it where most of the time your ok, your on your way to where you want to be.
