View Full Version : teen and think I've got Dementia

Hi my Names Anthony, I live in England, About 5-6 Months ago I started to feel as if my Memory and thinking was fading alittle, It was a big shock to me because I've always been really clever and could remember things what happened months and even years ago, I always got A's in all my exams ect, None of my family suffer from Dementia or Alz, Over the past few months its getting worst and I'm starting to fail exam, Lately my attention span has got alot worst.

I've had problems since a couple of years (about 2-3 years), I started having problems with my nervous system, Part of my Chest and side of my head went numb, This was just after I started loosing alot of weight and not eating much, I went to the doctors which wasn't much help (he didn't really have clue what could be happaning to me) I got really depressed and started to go bed very late, Also i stopped going to my friends because of cause I was depressed and i got hooked on a computer game called World of Warcraft (For people who don't know its a really addictive online game, Where you play with other people and fight all different creatures ect), I still went school and got on with it.

I was now 14 in year 10, For some reason I started hanging around with the wrong crowd (Maybe its because I was quite Insecure about myself), I started messing around in school and got in alot of trouble and started smoking, I got send to a Centre for bad pupils, There it was fine for afew days untill I got into a fight with someone about the same age of me, It was one of those school boy fights where we didn't hit one another, But just got each other in a headlock, We both walked off afterwards, About a week later I was walking to school and someone sneaked up to me I turned around and he hit me with a powerful metel object on the left side of my face, He knocked me out, Dunno how long i was out for, I woke up there was blood over the pavement (He had slit my lip wide open and knocked one of my teeth out) I walked to the hospital, Where I got my lip stitched, I spoke to the police about this guy (He ended up being the brother of the guy I had a fight on a week before, He was in his 20's, He was big and very well build)I also had anesia of what happaned just before the fight.

After that inccident, I tried to turn my life around, My parents were very happy with my improvement, So was I, I started getting A's again and all was good untill I got lightheaded and a day after I knew something was wrong, My memory and thinking faded i started to forget things which was not like me at all, I went to a new doctor, He gave some bloodtests I found out i had Iron deficiency (Anemia), I stated taking vitamins, It made me feel abit more energetic but didn't clear my impairment to memory and thinking problems, The next doctor appointment he made an appointment to the hospital, I met with the hospital doctor he gave me more bloodtests, They found i also was alittle low on Vitamin E (Need to take another test to make sure), The doctor also needs to do afew tests for my nerves and brain, Which will be soon, The past few days its getting worst, My concentation is very bad now.

I'm Very Worried and like i wrote it could be a number of things
Vitamin deficiency, Nervous System, Migraines (which i suffer from), Head injury from metel object, Depression or Not enough sleep.

Sorry for writing a tread so long, I'm just very scared.

Anthony

You really can't have Dementia as it is a disease of old age, and when it hits a 'younger' person that person is 55 to 65.

But your head injury may well have caused this problem. Did your doctor do an MRI of your brain? If not, that would seem like a good idea. Have you seen a neurologist?

If I were your parent, I would make sure you got every aspect of your brain tested. There are ways to cure almost anything in the brain nowadays, so don't be scared into ignoring it.

Good luck!

I bet you have a mild concussion. It's nothing to fool with but the effects will go away. Good luck!

Ask your doctor to do a blood test to check your thyroid gland along with the other tests. There are so many things that can cause your symptoms. Low thyroid function is actually very common and often goes along with iron deficiency.

I know its a stupid question, But It really gets me down.

Yeah sometimes I feel like life is going way too fast.

I have hypothyroidism and before I was diagnosed, I thought I was losing my mind. I couldn't remember a LOT of things that I used to. I'd put things in the fridge that needed to go in the cabinet and vice versa. I'd call dog by my son's name and my son by my dog's name. I'd be driving and forget where I was going or what street I was on. It got to be very scary.

Check out the thyroid board and you'll find a lot of stories like mine.

How did your appt go?

I second that Thyroid Fog ...

I think you'll find the difference is you KNOW there's something wrong YOU but still function logically, whereas Dementia/Alzheimers know there's something wrong but believe it's everybody ELSE and they don't function logically.

I remember my MIL's psychogeriatrician saying "If you remember you forgot, then your doing OK, it's when you forget you forgot your in trouble" LOL

I am currently having my thyroid Med's 'tweaked' so I am all over the place again at the moment (NOT a good thing when I've got exams in 2 weeks), I actually found my memory was worse when I was anaemic.

There are SO MANY things out there that mimic the dementia's and with all the media hype about Alzheimers (not all dementia's are Alzheimers) many people assume it's the beginning of the end way too fast.

TAlking about fast, I found time went very quickly (too quickly) when I had lots of clocks around the house. We had a clock in the lounge, a clock in the kitchen, a clock on the microwave, a clock on the stove, a watch on my wrist and an alarm clock on both sides of the bed .. darn clocks EVERYWHERE you looked ........ I read a Feng Shui book and got rid of all but 2 of the clocks and forced myself to stop wearing my watch at home (different when working) ......... and yeah ........ time did slow down ........ that was a day-to-day thing, but as for the year's speeding by .. well I figure I'm so busy, everyday is full and before I know it, a month has passed, 2 months, 1/2 a year and darn ! It's Christmas Again !!

It happens as you get older methinks ...........

angel bear, I'm going thru med adjustments too. Unfortunately, the doc thinks I'll have to go up yet again when I go in for another TSH test. The last time I was on synthroid that high, it sent me hyper and almost wound up in the hospital with my heart feeling like it was beating out of my chest!

Because of that episode, I changed to a generic form of synthroid and haven't been getting the palps like I used to.

Enuf a dat.....:) Back to AD......

Hey its me again, Still have not got my bloodtests back yet

Guess I'll have to go to the doctors and see whats going on.

Got a couple of tests coming up with my neurologist, Letter says NCS and EMG something to do with needles ect.

What I really want is a MRI to rule out stuff like MS, But how do I go about getting one?, I have not told my neurologist about my attack, To be honest It totally slip my mind (No pun intended :( ) I guess I have to stress how much this is really getting me down, It seems to be getting worse everyday, I'm forgetting things all the time.

Well just wanted to keep you updated, I'll keep in touch if I get anything Important to report.

Hi Anthony,

according to my medical texts here they state:

An electromyography (EMG) is a test that assesses the health of the muscles.

A nerve conduction study (NCS) assesses the nerves controlling the muscles and the junction between a nerve and a muscle.

Some of the symptoms you may have mentiond to your doctor to encourage him to refer you for EMG and NCS include muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, pain, numbness and tingling. Sounds like a preliminary check for MS to me

Hope this helps a little.

Cheers

Thanks AB

I wanted to ask afew questions about Thyroid problems.

Can Thyroid Problems cause Partial/full Numbness anyhwere in Body?.

What causes Thyroid Problems?, Can it be caused by really poor Diet

Whats the chances of a teenager getting it?.

I've been doing abit of reading about It but It seems there are many types ect, I read you put on alot of Weight and can't loose It, But I have the exact opposite I'm thin and can't put on weight to save my life.

One thing I have noticed Is that I'm Super senstive to Cold, If its even alittle cold I'll start to shake rapidly.

Also lately I've started to sometimes tremble for no reason and my head goes numb for afew seconds.

I know your not doctors, But Its just good to talk to someone about It, My Mom thinks I want Attention and my Dad thinks I'm a total Nut case, I can't even mention it without my Dad walking out the room :(

EDIT : By the way got another question, When you had this "Thyroid Fog" Did it gratually get worst or did it come on all of a sudden?.

Best to take this to the thyroid board Anthony,

but for now:

an OVERACTIVE thyroid can cause you to lose weight, make bits of you numb and make you super sensitive to temperatures.

The Thyroid Fog means you get forgetful, moody, weepy, angry and somewhat 'out of control'.

Once you start on medication, about 6 weeks later, you wonder what all the fuss was about ... and you learn to read your body and recognise symptoms that mean you need to see a doctor to tweak your medicatoins.

Go the the thyroid board ... they are much more useful as I have an UNDERACTIVE thyroid (look at food, gain weight, be lethargic and sleepy, and make you super sensitive to temperatures, tingly fingers and toes .. the two have very similiar symptoms except for the gain/lose weight thing.

Cheers

Hey guys, Just done my Tests will get the results on monday (Which is when I speak to my neurologist again).

I haven't got a Thyroid problem, Doctor said it was normal, But Its another thing I can cross off the list of could be's, Will ask neurologist to do a scan on my brain to rule out some scary stuff, Abit depressed at the moment, But life must go on!, Just hope I get this sorted before I start college, One thing I have noticed Is that I'm starting to jumble up words when I speak which I will mention to my neurologist.

Cya guys

Anthony
