When I had my first visit the doctor brought me into her office. We discussed my medical and sexual history. All the normal things you would expect. We discussed whether or not I wanted to be put on birth control. After that I was brought into the examination room. I had to wear a fancy gown. The nurse checked my weight. The doctor came in and she did a breast exam. She also showed me how to do a self exam. She then did a pap.

I remember my first visit was a little awkward because I didn't know what to expect. Just be sure that you are honest with your questions and do your best to relax.

Hope that helps!

That pretty much sums it up, but the PAP I think is what you are wondering about. The have a tool that spreads you open- it doesnt hurt, but is sometimes a little cold, this just makes it easier for the dr to see what they are doing. Then they just take some swabs- look like really big q-tips, of your cervix and surrounding area. It doesnt normally hurt, sometimes you may feel a little sting, but I have only had that once, and it was because I had some bad cells she wanted to make sure and get a good sample of. But normally it is quick easy and painless. A little akward because you are just up there and the dr is all in your "busines" but once you have the first one, you get over that real quick, especially once you have kids, there is a lot more pelvic exams involved with pregnancy, and a PAP will seem like nothing at all after pregnancy and child birth!! Good luck with everything, and dont worry, you will be fine, it is really not that bad!!

Some of us fnid the Pap smear a little more painful than that, and a little achy for maybe a day afterward, but that is likely because they want to get a good sample. If it didn't hurt as much as it did at my last pap, they wouldn't have found that I had any bad cells, since mine are in my cervical canal, so that little pinch may have saved my life. Also, they may stick their finger in your butt. This only happened to me twice, and one of the times was at my first exam. It's only fair to tell you these things. Don't be embarrassed. You're really just a piece of meat to the dr/np, who does probably dozens of pap smears every day. You'll get pretty used to it after a couple of visits. Oh, and be able to tell them the first day of your last period. I always get there and need a calendar to figure it out.
