hi everyone...my boyfriend a few years ago had an ingrown toenail removed and he has feared that type of "surgery" ever again...he was in excruciating pain....well the ingrown toenail has come back, one on each foot...so he knows he *has* to get this taken care of again...he seriously wants to get put out...im sure this isnt an option...but is there any procedure or something that can minimize this excruciating surgery?

Sorry to hear of the problems your boyfriend is having with ingrown toe nails. I too went to the doctor with the first one and from there I have a messed up toenail from his little operation on it. Now it grows inward from both sides and looks awlful and hurts more. So on the other foot I tried this and it helps... Soak foot in epson salt water.. Have water as hot as you can stand to start out. Soak it till the skin is very soft and take a pointed object like a wooden object or anything you can find just be careful and gently lift the nail in the area of the ingrown. It will hurt real bad at first try but keep soaking and doing this as often as you can and all of a sudden the pain stops. Make sure to wash foot good after using the salt water and put moisturizer on the area and foot to keep it from drying out. Keep this up and you will get some releif as we did. Good luck to you and hope you get relief from this as I did. Just be careful with any sharp object...........

Thanks for the posts...he is obviously going to see the podiatrist, was just asking if there are any methods (different than what he had done a few years ago that hurt so bad) that they use now...he has been putting it off because its so excruciating and his podiatrist visit 3 years ago was horrible, dont know if they didnt numb his toe enough or what. well he goes in tuesday and the doctor says he can get rid of the ingrown toenail permanently. dont want to know how he does it though, hope he didnt mean by removing the toenail. we'll see!

I've had that same surgery to have ingrown toenails, and it really wasn't something that I would to like to have done to me again.

I was really resistant to the Dr's suggestion of soaking my foot in betadine, but once I stopped being stubborn, it really helped alot!

Good Luck to your boyfriend! I really understand that it hurts, but it's much better than walking around with an ingrown toenail!

I have had it done 3 times, all in a month's time. Seemed like everytime i went back i would have anouther one. It didn't hurt me all that much the only thing that hurt was them injecting that deading medicine because it went so deep. But it is better than the pain of an ingrown toenail. Oh another reason it didn't hurt me that bad is that my doc. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/love1.gif is young and CUTE. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif: Good luck

Well my boyfriend went to this podiatrist today and they had to do both toes, each side of the big toe...but the thing is, this time he actually couldn't feel them cutting away so the numbing (which his doctor said is a special "wand") must have worked...of course now he's in a little pain but at least he made it through, he said this was a walk in the park compared to last time had it done...All i know is that i hope i never get one!
