View Full Version : can you spread herpes with your toothbrush?

I have contracted herpes orally thru sexual contact. I believe you would say HSV2. Ugh! However, my concern is that I am always chasing my toddler out of my bathroom and I thought I took enough precaution to keep my toddler safe. Today, I found my tooth brush missing and q-tips everywhere. His trade mark, of course. Now I am concerned for my toddlers health and welfare since all toddlers put everything in their mouths. Any advice?

The virus does not live outside the body for any length of time. Your toddler is fine. Now, if he grabbed it immediately after you used it (when the handles still warm from your grip) that would be a different story.

You have been diagnosed with hsv2 orally?

A short while back there was a thread looking for input from people who have hsv2 orally.

I am new to this...
so, to clarify, yes I believe that I have HSV2 orally. However, I have not been diagnosed professionally. I just told my dr that now I have lesions in my throat. That was the end of it.

P.S. Thanks for the reply about my toddler. I just worry so much about my kids and their potential risk, especially now that i have it orally. They are at a greater risk. i sometimes worry about kissing them too.
Is there anyone else out there with the same type I have?

You really should be diagnosed professionally so you know what you are dealing with and how to protect your child. From your symptoms described on your other thread it does not sound like herpes. Herpes does not last continually for 2 years. Your blood may test positive since you have it genitally. You should have your lesions cultured. Since you had herpes for a long time, I'd guess you have anitbodies that would make an oral infection mild at best.
Please get the facts and let us know what you find out.

Take it or leave it but try gargeling with Hydogen peroxide and water...20-30% Hydrogen Peroxide rest warm water. It really kills germs in your mouth/throat.

I agree with MOT - get your throat cultured, it sounds strange. As well, HSV2 can live in either location, as can HSV1. So oral herpes doesn't necessarily correspond with either strain. To be sure of what you have, get it cultured and properly diagnosed.

Ok, so here's the deal. Initial onset of my HSV2 was bad and once it was swabbed it got worse. I have lived with it for 16 years and have gotten it under control thru lifestyle changes (keeping my stress down when possible) and medication. I have had long breaks w/o a b/o. Fabulous! Then major life changes started happening with me and my family. Good and bad stress that was uncontrollable. I had an itch in my throat for a couple of days to the point it was driving me crazy. I thought I had a hair stuck in my throat. I start picking at it trying to get it out. Nothing. Shortly there after the real symptoms started. It feels just like when I am stressed and have an o/b with HSV2. I have had a few days, maybe weeks, here and there that I do not take my Rx, but for the most part it seems like it flares up regularly. I have reduced from 1gram to 500mg to sometimes none at all. I am learning new ways to deal with stress since my major life changes are still happening. Not just one change, but several. No need to go into details. When it rains it pours.
I have not found a dr. yet that has a clue. I would be happy to seek further attention with someone who is more competant. However, i am 100% sre these r the same symptons. you'll have to trust a veteran. thanks for ur concern and input. i appreciate it!

You said it felt like you had a hair in your throat?? This sounds silly, but it COULD be something like that. My Dad had a piece of popcorn (unpopped) stuck in is throat for two years. (No joke). He knew it was there, but the Dr's couldn't see it.

You may be (and probably are considering your history) correct about the diagnoses - but don't you want to find out for sure?? There are other possibilites, and if it isn't herpes, maybe it could be healed up for you??

Just a thought

You know, at first I did consider a piece of popcorn too. Then a hair. Then the real symptoms started. The feeling changed and I can actually feel the flare up and I have more than one lesion in my throat. They are on the back of my tongue and gums too. I wish now that I never would have touched the back of my throat because I believe I made it spread like wild fire. Maybe it could have been contained to some degree.
Currently it is pretty much under control...down to a tickle or nothing at all, but it has been really bad too.
I know what you mean about having it checked, but like I said i do not know of a dr that is competant enough. When the time is right, I guess. Meanwhile I am refusing to be someone guinea pig. How do we get the world to recognise this virus diffently? Not only to dx and treat, but not so taboo either.
When I was first dx I had no one to turn to except my b/f who is now my husband. I am so glad that he didn't dump me like I have read about others, but I would have understood (I think). I know I would have been heart broken. Anyway, he is the only person I have ever been with. However, as a child I was molested so it makes me wonder, but I will never know. Now, my husband and I have moved past this together and we have a very healthy and wonderful relationship.
I am going to attempt the peroxide and water idea. Do you know of any other otc herbal remedies? I have tried Lysine and I think it has helped, but it is not a cure.

A swab, culture and a competent lab is all thats needed correct?

I too don't understand why you wouldn't want to know what it was for sure so it could be treated properly.

Then again its your body and your temple to do with as you see fit.

Good luck and let us know what the outcome is if you seek a definitive answer to solve your mystery.
