First off let me say thanks for everyone who has contributed to this forum as i have recieved alot of good information from reading through and realizing that herpes is more popular than i ever could of imagined. Here is my sitsuation I recently started seeing this girl and and we get along great and our relationship has been moving along fairly swiftly but we have yet to have sexual intercourse but i have dabbled in performing oral sex on her. aprox 2-3 days afterwards i noticed that i was breaking out around my chin lower lip area and it itched something fierce, Well at first i thought that it was irritation from some sharp pubic stubble but a couple days later she was complaining of some itching so i quickly started investigating and when i looked at her pubic region i noticed it was covered with red sores with a white ***** head. I immediatly told her she needed to see a doctor, and she got in later that evening. She was prob in the doctors/gynocologist office 15 min when she came out with some genital herpes booklets/dvd. Needless to say i was freaking out inside but for the sake of not freaking her out anymore i decided to be supportive and strong for her even though i was crying inside. Now her doctor never swabbed her but from the pics ive seen on the internet it looked like herpes to me. So i immediatly went to the doctor and after inspection, They didnt think it was herpes but they did do a swap test on my face, My breakout sores was considerably smaller and didnt have the same white ***** head in the middle. Now ive yet to get my results back (hopefully sometime today) but even if they come back negative i realized that it might not be accurate. Im now at day 5 of the breakout and they are shrinking up and all ive been doing is washing with a good anti bacterial soap and taking the anti viral medicine that my doctor prescribed. (not for treating herpes). At first i was upset that i had possibly recieved this gift because i had never had any signs before, nor any problems with sexual partners but after reading the information about the virus being dormant for years i have stopped blaming my partner because she is not the type of person who would not tell me, If she did have herpes. She did tell me that she had the chicken poxs twice and has had pink eye a couple of times and i think they are somewhat related to the some strain of herpes virus but without a doubt in my mind i know she didnt intend to hurt me if she was the carrier. I am very interested in knowing what my test results are gonna show as far as its type 1 or 2, what the difference means to our relationship and what we can look forward too in the future. I might add i dont have any breakouts in my genital area. This breakout around my face has really caused me to shy away from any affection because of the fear of passing on to her face/mouth and this is really been hard because i enjoy making out etc. Is it always gonna be like this? Can i never kiss her again, without fear of passing it on to her face? I have so many questions/concerns. Mainly i just really care about this girl and i dont want to cause her any discomfort by my actions. We have made a commitment to get thru this problem together, Without passing blame on each other. Sorry for the length of my post and also my english/typing skills are not the greatest. Thanks in advance

Before you give yourself an ulcer you need the results of your swab/culture/test. I know the waiting is hard.

Your test should show you (if in deed you do have herpes) if it is either type one or type 2. And yes, culture tests are fairly accurate. And on the same hand you can have a inaccurate test as well. In general anything and everything is ALWAYS possible!

I just read your post again.. Cut and paste above... HOW come she wasn't swabbed for a culture test??????

You've got yourself all worked up over your own diagnoses. When your test comes back that will give you something more to go on than pictures on the internet.

Im not sure i was wondering the same thing myself, How can a doctor after 15 min of visiting just prescribe 2 different mg's of valtrex. One of them she is to take for 10 days then follow up with the other one for the rest of her life? Doesnt make sense to me either but maybe after my test comes back it will shed some lite. On the plus side, She is feeling much better not nearly as irritated, itching etc....

And she's ok with this? Taking medication for something she doesn't know she has for sure?

Why don't you get her an appointment with the person that swabbed your face. That way you will have real information and not just "well, it looks like" inaccurate information.

When I first got herpes, I was put on daily valtrex. About 6 months latter I went to another doctor who said why be on it daily when you don't know how often you have outbreak, just take as needed...that made more sense to me. I'm trying this for a while. I can always go back to daily therapy. (also I'm not worried about spreading it)

You definitely don't want her taking Valtrex for life unless you know for sure she needs it. Usually, it's not prescribed as a permanent thing unless the patient is having over 5 outbreaks in a year. Obviously, this isn't her. I'd have her switch doctors and get this diagnosed and treated properly.

Just a follow up and some help determing whether my Doctor knows what he is talking about. As stated below i did have a swab test done on a Open sore around my mouth and it came back as Type 1. Further blood tests was run last Friday and i just recieved the results, IGG test came back as 22.40 and IGM test came back as 1.20 along with a White blood cell test of 13.5. My doctors interpetations is that i have Both 1 and 2. Are these results difinitive or should i be retested within a couple months? Its been aprox 3 weeks since i had my first outbreak and it was only around my mouth and very small. NOT to mention it was The first time i have ever had anything like that. Thanks in advance for any replies or comments about my test results and what they do mean.

Ok after calling my doctor again, It seems they really dont know anything specific yet. The two test results they have are (1) IGG result of 22.40 for type 1, This is what the nurse told me but after talking to the doctor he says he doesnt know if that result is from the type 1 or 2 test. 2nd result was an IGM test of 1.20 for type 2. Again the same mixed reports between the nurse and the doctor. Who knows but they need to get there stories straight cuz im freaking out.

Also What tests should i be asking for or making sure that they are actually taking. My intentions are to get the actuall results so there is no more confusion.

You definitely want to get a copy of the test results and post them. Obviously someone isn't very well informed.

I do know that any result from an IGM test is pretty much useless. Disregard this info - it can show positive for any number of things!! Your White Blood count doesn't tell you anything about your herpes, so for validation purposes this is also useless information.

Once you get the results of the IGG test try posting them and you'll likely get good response.

You want them to be doing the HerpesSelect test. From what I understand from reading other posts, it's the most accurate test in the US. (Being in Canada, I can't really comment on that!)
