Hello everyone, I had surgery in June 2001. I had both of my bunions done at the same time. Everyone was going smooth. The surgery was a cinch and I suffered no complications. I went for PT to help my feet I am a teacher so I had the whole summer off to heal. Now I am suffering pain in my right foot off and on, but never in my left foot. The pain is coming from under my big toe. I was wondering has anyone else suffered any pain. It is almost a year and I just starting getting this pain? Any thoughts are feedback would greatly help.

Hi there, I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your question, but I was wondering if you could tell me how your scar looks after a year post op. I had my left foot done in Sept. of 2001 and 7 months later it's still kind of red and bruised in that area. Is that normal and will it EVER go away!? It's not very bad or anything but I was under the impression that after this much time, all I would be left with is a scar.

had bunionectomy on both feet in 93,, with no pain meds afterwords,, i was in pain for several weeks, lots of swelling and throbbing yet my dr put a freezing agent inside the wound before he sewed me up, so i got off lucky, by the time the 'real' pain set in, i was pretty much healed. a year or so after the surgery, i incurred the same 'ball' pain under my big toe on one foot,,, i was informed this was due to inappropriate shoes, and or standing on my feet for a long period, or from dancing in which i had been doing some. its been almost 10 yrs and finally there just now starting to grow back, and im experience more pain in both feet now. i hd a wonderful dr, yet i do recall signing a contract of knowledge that this is not a permanent rememdy for bunions,, they will grow back eventually, usually 10-13 yrs after inital surgery. my mother had one foot done in 99 and totally regrets it,, her foot is so deformed and she can barely move her toes,, she didnt take my advice and use my podiatrist :-(. My scars are not that visible althought it did take a while (over a year) for them to get to the most unnoticeable . I used sunscreen on my scars if i went out in the sun,, which i fanatic about :-P ok all, ive gabbed enought, hope to have helped

hey l'il bit.....my podiatrist cut a wedge out of the bone in the big toe, straightened the big toe and put two surgical screws in to keep the toe straight. he never said the bunion might "grow back"..!!!!! i don't see how it could unless i didn't have the screws in there? say it ain't so!!!!!!

claujah, unfortunately it is so. Bunion is bone, they only shave it down, and have to break and reset due to the former bunion making your toe crooked. Mine were done in 93-94 and yes they are growing back, yet not as fast as they were before my surgery. Goodluck

Hello,
I had my left foot bunion removed last monday. June 17.
It really has not hurt. Just a bit, the pain meds have worked. I have a special boot to wear when I walk. I have found that I can not stand for more than a few minutes without some discomfort. I had pins and sometimes feel a slight bone cracking feeling. Like a slight popping of a knucke. Is this normal. I also had my hammertoe fixed with a pin next to the toe with the bunion. I returned to work after the 3rd day, but kept to my desk and propped up my foot. It is hard to sit still but the whole foot feels better when propped up. My husband and son have been waiting on me, I will have to have the other foot done, also.
I like this chat it is very helpful. Does anyone know when I can wear tennis shoes again.
Hopeful,

HI Pandra Bear, It took a while for me to wear sneakers. I had my surgery done in at the end of June. After getting out of my special boot. I wore flip-flops for quite a while. Then I had to buy new sneakers a size bigger because my foot could not fit into my regular sneakers. Since I had both done at the same time it may be different for you. Everyone's recovery time is different. Good luck.

Hello Katnyc,
You're very brave to do two feet at the same time. The pain you're receiving depends on whether you received screws and Anchilles lengthening. If its screws then you must get an X-ray to determine if they are placed correctly. One of the main things you will experience is itching from expansion of your skin and tissues which may or may not cause a rash to occur. I am not a doctor but I had the surgery and believe me you learn a lot from bunion surgery. Oh yeah be very careful with surgery on your Anchilles, scars can be permanent.
Wish you a lot of luck
