Does anybody know if this is okay? I've read that you're not supposed to microwave formula or breast milk (for reasons I'm still not sure of... so I just always heat bottles in a pan of hot water). I just started giving my ds (who is just over 5 months old) veggies (that come in the jars), and have been heating them by placing his little bowl into a bigger bowl that has hot water in it (same idea as with his bottles). But is it ok to microwave it? Thanks!

I make my sons food, so it's frozen and I thaw it in the microwave and then once it's completely thawed I warm it up, if it needs it. I think they don't advise using the microwave because it's so easy to over heat it. I don't see anything wrong with it, just be really carefull. Stir it really well once it's done and test it on your lower lip to make sure it's not too hot. If you're carefull, there's nothing wrong with warming in the microwave.

The reason why they suggest not micro waving formule is because of the chance of burning your babies mouth.Micro waving doesn't heat evenly the edges and in side of foods get hotter.. Micro waving should be fine as long as though you stir the food well to distribute the heat and check to make sure its not to hot..

The reason they tell you not to nuke bottles is because you can get hot spots in the middle and burn your baby's mouth. Breastmilk shouldn't be put in the microwave because it can destroy the antibodies in the milk.

as long as you stir the food really well you should be fine,, its like the pp's say its to do with hotspots. my daughter is almost 4 and i used to microwave her food and formula bottles and ds is 6 months and we use the microwave to heat up his food and sometimes his bottles.

Thanks for the replies! Just a question though: are there no antibodies in formula or baby food to destroy when microwaving? Only in the breast milk?

Sadly (for those of us who couldn't breastfeed) antibodies only come from mommy's milk.

I once read there are over 100 different components of breastmilk that they can't duplicate in formula... antibodies being one of them.
