I take klonopin at night for sleep (I have anxiety). It has helped alot. The doctor has not given me anythingto take for anxiety during the day. I have generalized anxiety. I was wondering about supplementing during the day with someting. I was interested in GABA. I do not see how what I take during the day will interact with what I take at bedtime. But you never know and I will ask my doctor on my next visiit but it isn't for a few weeks yet. Any ideas on what may help anxiety besides valerian? I am just looking for input cause you all have good ideas. thanks

I take the amino acid 5-htp daily for anxiety and it is working very well. However in your case, I would be careful because there could definitely still be drug interactions even though you are taking one in the morning and one at night. It is best to ask a doctor before taking anything, natural or not but don't expect any regular MD to consider mentioning anything natural to you, it won't happen. If you wanted to go the natural route completely, perhaps you would seek an alternative medical professional.
Also, I've never taken GABA but I learned about it in class and I often thought that if the 5-htp ever stops working, I'm going to try that next.
Good Luck

thank you for answering my post. I take my klonopin at night so I just figured something taken during the day would be ok. I feel fine around family but I just never feel comfortable in other settings and I have a 4 year old child and you know how that goes having to be around other parents, kids etc. I will more than likely ask my dr for a prescription like lexapro or someting to take during the day but I figured if I found someting that helped during the day then that would be one less prescription I would have to take. haha Also I know going the natural route is best. so thank you again.

I personally like Bach's Rescue Remedy for dealing with anxiety. It's homeopathic and all you need are 4 drops under your tongue or in a glass of water. It really helps take the edge off. Its even safe to give to pets and I've done so numerous times over the years.

I recently started taking Nervatona "Calm". Its not particularly strong, but bought it when i went to the Health Shop because i was taking a prescribed drug at the time and couldn't take anything stronger.
I've heard about a natural "drug" called St John Wort (anyone know much about this??). I'm now taking Lexapro (prescribed medication) but in future i may revert to something like SJW as i believe it doesn't have side effects experienced with conventional medication.

St. John's Wort is great. I have personally used it during various high stress/anxiety times and it helped me quite a bit. My mom recommended it to me several years ago because it helped her quite a bit. It has been a true life saver for me several times. I was able to take it during the day without feeling any kind of drowsy side effects which was a huge plus in my book.
You can find it at most vitamin shops, and natural foods stores. The good thing about it is that it's a natural remedy for stress/anxiety without having to use the prescription medications. You may want to try it.
Hope you are feeling less amxiety soon. Good Luck!! :)

St, John's Wort is an herbal medication that is ONLY indicated for light or moderate Depression, not for anxiety, In addition, it does not work for everyone.
Keep in mind, that those who use it should protect their eyes by wearing a good quality sunglass since there is a tendancy for a lot of retinal(eye) exposure to harmful rays (UVA UVB)of the sun

It may not be specifically indicated for anxiety, but it did help with mine. I do agree that it may not help everyone, but that goes with any kind of medication/herbal supplement. I would say it's worth a try if you are not wanting to take prescription meds. Many medications are specifically labelled for use with certain conditions, but also help other conditions "off label" though.
**I do have to add that in the information it does specifically mention treatment of anxiety, along with other problems such as nerve pain & sleep disorders.**
And yes- I totally agree about the use of eye protection. That's something people don't realize unless they read the literature about it. I guess you never really think about any kind of medication having a contra-indication concerning the eyes. Kind of like being suseptible to easily sunburning when on many antibiotics.

I really like Bach's Rescue Remedy as well. Works great for me. It's also known as 5 Flower Remedy in some places. It's amazing what those 4 little drops will do.

Another vote for Rescue Remedy! It works great for me.
I have anxiety disorder. Rescue Remedy has gotten me through a funeral, a number of meetings, and many unpleasant confrontations with my ex-husband.
The trick with the flower remedies is to follow the instructions. I've read people complaining that they "drank half a bottle and it did nothing". That's because you only need 4 drops!
It's perfectly safe and my teenage son even takes it in the morning before school on test days.
