My painful swollen ankles are causing me problems at the moment and the other day the left one just gave way. I'm average height, weight, build, etc. Could anyone tell me if this is the onset of arthritus?

Hi,

Ostheo, or rheumatoid arthritis can attack ankle joints. Usually during the time of swelling, "flares," is when the damage is being done. Sorry to be a bearer of not so good news, but this is what happened to me. The rheumatoid has deterioated to nothing the cartledge inbetween the ankle joints, and is almost fused together. The left is worse than the right. I can very well understand the pains you're going thru. Walking is difficult.....Pray for better days, are there are some despite the pains we endure.

HI, it could be due to some kind of arthritic condition, such as the poster said, or maybe connective tissue disease, edema, gout, other things. How long have you had the pain and swelling? Do you have this anywhere else? Do you have any other symptoms, even if you think they might not be related to your feet?

Hi Tess,

Let us know how your ankle replacement operation goes please. Do you have rheumatoid, and or osteo?....Both ankles are super bad with me. The cartledge has deterioated to nothing, barely walking myself, painful etc, but I'm such a chicken to do anything besides taking pain pills. I admire your courage. Hope things will work out for you....Blessings...Vergie

Hi Vergie This is tess well i did it had the ankle replacement 5th november was in hospital for a week now at home,It was a long operation 7hours more than expected as i have very small bones in the foot and the surgeon had to take it slow, but i am feeling good, the second day after the op,i had a pump Morphine PCA Which i used to control the pain,i would say ache more than pain,i was in so much pain before anyway,Then after 2 days i was out of bed with little weightbear with my back slab on and special shoe, just sitting in the chair, felt a bid odd when i first got up as all the blood must start flowing properly back in your feet, after 4 days had a plaster put on and have about 10 sutures along the scar, they are due to be taken aout 21st then see the surgeon,if all okay they will replaster again for another 4 to 5 weeks.Im just resting at home,i have a walker and have family to help me so thets the main thing,i am all geared to stay at home until 21st december as i have stairs in my flats and no lifts. But i will keep busy computer tv etc.I was told i could weightbare but im still a bit reluctant too much as when i do it aches,i use my walker to go about 20 mtrs every day across the hallway to the loo,so far so good but i do get twinges in the inside of the ankle but the surgeon says this is the new ankle getting used to the bones around and also my muscles are getting back to normal,Obviously there are things to look for.if u feel unwell at all then u must call the surgeon incase any infection,i am eating healthy and want to keep my weight down for my new ankle,i would say up to now its been okay,i had normal anistetic so i was out for the whole operatio, was very groogy next day sick but this is normal,so i will let you know more after iv been to see the surgeon on 21st november.Dont be scared,i was terrified but i was walking so bad and life was awfull,if this works my xmas present has been worth waiting for the docter says it was a success so lets hope hes right.

By the way i have Rheumatoid arthritis and im not sure if that was what was in my foot but it was severe arthritis anyway,il ask the surgeon wednseday and find out exactly what ankle replacement i had as there is a few different names, keep smiling,im 50 and did get terrible days before the op,when i thought what is happening to me but now i am feeling more positive and i am a strong willed person and will fight this disease.I was on embrel but had to stop for the operation so i am without it,i inject 2 times a week but so far my arthritis is doing okay without 2 weeks after the op.
