According to info that I have been told you shouldn't. Just because you dont have a outbreak you can still pass the virus to someone else. It spreads from skin to skin contact. So if your area of infection is the gential region thats is not where you should have any unprotected contact... With the use of dental dam oral sex could be possible without transmittion. Remember I said POSSIBLE WITHOUT TRANSMITTION not GAURANTEED WITHOUT TRANSMITTION. Hope that helps.

It really depends on the couple. The fact is, if you are not in middle of an active outbreak, the chances of transmission are pretty low. I believe about 9% for a female to get from a male, and about 4% for a male from a female. It certainly does happen tho', so it's important to make sure your partner is aware of the situation first.

I got genital herpes via oral sex. Although my partner didn't know he had it, and so I wasn't given the choice, had I been able to choose we still would have had oral sex. It's more about how important the intimacy is to your relationship. We are both still willing to continue on, understanding that at this point I could get oral herpes as well. Our relationship is more important than a little bit of uncomfortableness once in awhile.

That being said, if you're out for a one nighter - it might be better to avoid oral sex (or intercourse for that matter, as you can spread it that way too) until you meet someone that you are willing to tell about the risks first.
