Depending upon how badly you twisted your knee you could have a condition known as ostochondritus dissicants. I had this in my ankle where a bruised bone due to a sprain can cause a number of levels of severity from a simple severe bruised bone to a loose body within the joint.
This is typical for the knee, elbow and ankle.
Most likely it is a tissue. It sounds like you could have over exerted or torn a tissue. There are tisses that run from the knee down along the tibia and fibula which make up the top of the ankle joint.
Look to an encyclopedia or the internet to see if you can find any structures with in a picture that might look like the area you are experiencing pain. If it does not go away or lessen after a couple of days it is probably important to see an Orthopedic specialist.
A Chiropracter may also be able to help in such a situation.
