I have bulging discs at every level in my lumbar, and I can't feel anything on the "outside".

The discs are containted within the spinal canal. You can't feel them via an external examination.

You can't really feel it on the outside, it's more of a deep sharp, throbbing pain, which can cause radiating pain from compressed nerves. However, if a disc herniates, it can cause your back muscles to go into spasm as well. It's an intense cramping feeling that can spread across your back, and makes it difficult to bend, roll over, or get in and out of cars.
