View Full Version : Highlights Lighter at the Top

I just got my hair highlighted yesterday... I've highlighted it many times and stuck with the same blonde color but at a new salon. This time for some reason my roots turned pretty much platinum blonde but after the roots (where I had dyed my hair brown), it's not as light. This hasn't happened to me before even when in the same situation! Any advice on this? They did not use any toner on my hair... maybe that's why. I'm sure it will fade some and it isn't bad looking. I just plan on going back in about a month and will ask for some toner next time.

Did you tell them that your roots were natural but the rest was dyed? This will affect the way the bleach affects your hair. That and you could have experienced "hot roots" where the heat from your scalp accelerates the bleaching process. Did you get foils?

Yes I did tell them the roots were natural and yes I got foils. Do you think maybe it was just the bleach they were using? I have dyed my hair brown before with a little bit of regrowth at the top and it's always been fine.

I don't know. It sounds like they screwed up the timing or the application. Im getting my hair foiled tomorrow-hopefully it goes allright. I used to get foils all the time but wen back to my natural brown for a couple of years. I honestly like my hair better with bleached highlights. It adds lots of volume. you might want to talk to the stylist and see if they have any clue as to how that happens. Toner might help too.

I also prefer my hair with the bleached highlights. I usually go for a sleek look, but I like the roots to have volume, and the highlights allow me to do this. My roots get oily without them and my hair looks too flat.

After a couple of days it seems like the color is evening out! Maybe it just needed a bit of time. Usually my highlights get a tiny bit darker anyway. I'll just tell them about that next time to make sure it comes out fine!

Thanks for your feedback :)!

Just got mine done. She toned them alot, and they are very even. They will probably lighten up after a few washings, but I think your main issue was indeed the toner. I've gone without it before and I like it better when they use it.

I just had my hair done last week. I get highlights and lowlights. He foils it everytime he does it. I don't know if he uses a toner or not. How would I know, and what does the toner do?

Usually what they do is they apply the foil highlights, then after rinsing them out , they apply some toner on my hair (at the sink) and wait for a little while. One salon they left it on for a minute or two, some took longer... then they shampooed and conditioned my hair and continued with styling. This is what they did for the toner on me. Toner usually fixes the hair tone and evens it all out. If there is any brassy color, toner will get rid of this. It's often used with bleach because some people get more of a "yellow" color and this will turn it more blonde. Also, some people get toner after bleach so not make it so light.

I'm sure I just need some toner next time! I usually ALWAYS use toner when they use bleach in my hair so I'm sure that's the reason. If you get highlights done without bleach, then you probably do not need it. I used to get golden blonde highlights and they could get it lighter with color somehow but now I do it a lighter blonde so bleach is needed on my brown hair.
