Why is doctor reluctant to give me topomax but keep me on Depakote- which makes me gain weight and make me more depressed and angry, and it also gives me diarreah- I feel like hes not listening- I dont like the way it makes me feel- does this sound familiar to anyone?

My first pdoc was reluctant to put me on Topamax because I was on birth control pills. It messes with the effectiveness, so he wouln't prescribe it. I went to another pdoc and she prescribed it for me. I lost alot of weight from it. I have now developed an eating disorder. My therapist and her have mentioned taking it away from me because they feel the Topamax has caused my anorexia. Topamax has really helped my moods level out and helped my depression. I don't know what I would do without it.
There are some negative side effects, as with all drugs, but they all went away after a few months for me. The one I remember most is that soda tasted flat and I would get brain fog.
I don't know why docs insist on giving us meds that make us feel bad and make us fat. I switched docs after 2 or 3 attempts for Topamax.

My pdoc doesn't want to give me the kind of meds I was asking for, to treat my anxiety - she feels I will get 'addicted' to them. However, she did prescribe Topamax right away when I asked for it! But I am so disappointed in Topamax! I was hearing all this about weight loss & etc, so I was all for it, but when I started taking it I was aching all over & got chest tightness which scared the hell out of me because I have heart disease. (I know you have to give meds a certain amount of time to work and you need a certain amount of time to adjust to them, but I was freaked!! LOL) So now I need to start all over & research on another kind of mood stabilizer. Darn. I hope you have an easier time than me. Keep after your doc about what kind of meds you want to try if you don't like the ones you're on - it's your body!!

HI guys me again. I am still being told to take the damn Dep:mad: !! I have F**% firewater coming out of me- and I cannot take it anymore!! I keep being told to take it take it- and wait to see pshy. in m,ed group- but- I am moving this weekend- well- I am almost done- but my med grp is Mondays- here it is Tues- so I anyway I was told to hold off till Wed to see him privately. Get this though- before I left session on Friday- I talked to Intake coordinator and she said if I am feeling that bad from Med- than I need to see a GI doctor- I looked at her like WHAT- it's the side effect of the pill!!! She just stared at me than said- well if you are feeling that depressed- than you need to check yourself into a hospital. I NEVER EVER have been more insulted or miunderstood in my life!! I left there BAWLING!!! I mean I go there for help- and I GET some- but as soon as I HOLLY have a legit concern or comment on something that would better suit me as far as RX- they run me ragged make me chase them all over. PLease god someone out there tell me that I should speak up to someone about how this "treatment" coordinator talked to me and made me feel on top of the meds that really have that nasty side effect!! Till than- I'll continue to ramble! LOL

well, neither worked for me. On depokote I felt like a zombie, I was in a fog and felt detatched from life. On Topomax I felt like I was dying. While I am used to emotions up and down and all over, neither of these meds made me feel warm and cozy. I am thinking of going back on something Zonegram. Anyone ever heard it? It's an anticonvulsant and also used as a mood stabilizer. I also lost weight, it was wonderful. I have gained 12 pounds in the last month, I was on Topomax and Invega.
Like some of the others posted, maybe you should seek yet another opinion. If the pdoc isn't listening to you, then really whats the point? My podc happens to be fresh outta school and really likes to listen. He hasn't yet been corrupted by medical profession. I get his full attention, it's quite nice.
I hope all gets better soon, I am going through my own med challenge at the moment. Hang in there, it's bound to get better.

Topamax has been a miracle for me. But, I also take Lexapro for the depression side of me. It made me lose a lot of weight at first, but I could stand to lose about 40lbs. I've leveled out with the weight loss now. This combo works very well for me.

They put me on something a little new to the market I GUESSS- that my doc says it may curb my appetite- and it will NOT make me gain weight. I know sometimes the benifits out weigh the risks- but when your depressed and bi-polar that is all you need is more of you to hate- even if it is a few pounds. Well that's it for now. Im on Cymbalta. If anyone has any info on it I would love to hear from you!!! Thanks Holly

I tried cymbalta a few yrs. ago. Be careful, it's an more of an anti-depressant. I spent a ton of money and didn't sleep for 4 days. I don't know what type BP you are, (I am BP l) but it took only a matter of days for things to wrong for me.

I am supposed to be on antidepressent- but they kept telling me to wait- IDK it is very frustrating. I have Bi-polar 1 with manic depressive and severe anxiety- severe mania's and all that good stuff. I was on the depakote and had severe Lava from my butt lol. They just want to do things at thier pace and do not realize that we know our bodies- and we can only try. We are all guini pigs to Pshycologists and pain specialist. I read alot about the Cymbalta and the most common one ppl complained about was "coming off" like withdrawl symptoms- I think that is really a concern- I mean alot of medications have withdraw synptoms- but if they give a pill that can cause you to feel the w/d- they DO have something to counteract that- they just dont want to admit to thier short comings. AHHHH whatever. I am glad I get to talk to someone on here about all this. Thank you and ALL of you who take the time to read my ramblings. Take care- I'll keep you posted!!

I am glad to hear it works for you, Lord knows when we actually do come accross something that we should stick with it. It helped me in various other ways, but man, my mania was bad.
Good luck to all of you and good luck w/ the med-go-round.

We all need as much help as we can get- and thank you for all your responses. Lord knows I will be on here more times than I would like to be. What do you take for your mania? Is there something that I should ask for specifically? Hope to hear from you soon. Holly
