Hello, I have a kidney funcitioning at 24% that they say gives me pain. What was yours functioning at when they removed it? Did it relieve the pain and infections? My urologist said he would take mine out but I'm not so sure I want to go through with that.

Hi,
I had my kidney removed almost 2 yrs. ago. My remaining kidney is dysfunctional/failing, but I'm not in full blown failure yet because I would be dead. I will not go on dialysis and transplant is not an option in my situation. Everyone is different. Chances are, you will be just fine.
I've just been dealing with this severe, never ending pain for 27 yrs. and I've had enough. My kidney problems started when I was 9 and I'm now 36. My family doesn't agree with my decision, but it's mine. I know it's a little selfish, but the quicker this hellhole of pain ends, the better. The decision to have your kidney removed is obviously a huge one to make. You just need to educate yourself about the pros and cons and get some counseling, if you need to. Talk to us, ok? We are here for you!

How much if it has failed? What is your kidney function and how fast is the declination?

Hi 2+,
I'm in Stage 4 of CKD (chronic kidney disease) and my GFR is 17. A few months ago, I was in Stage 3 and my GFR was 31. When my GFR drops below 15 is when I would need to go on dialysis, but since I'm not, that will be it for me. At this point, I don't won't to know my numbers anymore. There's no reason to, ya know?? Bye for now!!

Friendly - one
I have read your story over and over and I almost feel lucky that my stones are not as bad as you. Question for you - I have only one kidney (from birth) and it's a horseshoe with severe fusion (There is no differential between left side and right - it's all on the left) and I am at 43% function (I am 38 years old). They say I am not sick enough for them to fix the problem as the risk to my perfectly healthy heart is severe. I have been told I can go from 43% to next to nothing practically overnight without warning - ergo they measure function every 3 months with a NRS. Anyway, I still can't fathom the concept of not sick enough to do anything, I would think at one point in kidney failure I would be too weak to fight after surgery. What am I missing? (P.S. I too am not eligible for transplant).
Complete diagnosis: Horseshoe kidney, UPJ obstruction and retrocaval ureter. H/O stones and renal colic and whatever is causing the last 11 months of undiagnosed misery.

Hi 2+,
That must be very unsettling news for you. That doesn't make sense to me not to try to do something now. Like you said, you could go into failure w/o any warning, then you would definitely be too sick to try to get healthy again. I'm at a lost for words here. I'm sure you've had 2, 3, and probably even a 4th opinion by now. Are they all saying the same thing?? Just wait and see?? I hate that!!!!
It such a dichotomy here. I don't want to live and am preparing for my impending death, and you want to do everything you can to be healthy. I probably would to, but, I've just been through waaayyy toooo much and I can take much more, ya know??
Please let me know how you are doing and I hope they are keeping you comfy with liberal amount of pain meds! ;) Take care and bye for now!
