If you have nodules on your thyroid will it make your throat hurt.

Sometimes. It really depends on how big they are and where they are in the thyroid. I have a huge nodule, but don't get any of the throat problems from it. My throat issues come from reflux. Btw, acid reflux is often caused by being hypothyroid.

Hi Nyxie,

I am very interested in your comment about acid reflux and being hypothyroid. I believe I am hypo because of many of the symptoms I've had and I have acid reflux. Would you be able to explain your statement in more detail. This would make total sense for me. Plus, I just started taking an iodine supplement for being possible hypo. I've also read the iodine is beneficial to acid reflux. I'm trying to tie the two together.

Thanks

-Dave

Hi Dave!
The thyroid is the master gland for your body's metabolism. Low thyroid function means lower metabolism, including the digestive system and production of stomach acid. Low stomach acid is one of the causes of reflux. The stomach has to churn more in order to get the same amount of work done. This is also why a lot of hypoT folks are chronically constipated - the digestive system slows down.

I also take iodine supplements. I've been on 8 drops of 5% Lugol's solution (the liquid equivalent of Iodoral) for a couple of months now. While I noticed some improvement with reflux since taking it, the biggest improvement has been from removing all gluten and dairy from my diet. While other people have also noticed improvement with their reflux while taking iodine, its usually not the primary reason they take it.

I've read (I think) that you're taking Iodoral? How much are you up to a day? Have you been tested for hypoT? What kind of symptoms are you having? Just so you know, if you have thyroid antibodies, iodine may not be the best choice for you as some folks with Hashi's get a bad reaction from it. Also, did you know there's a complete protocol to follow when taking iodine supplements?

Hrrrm. I think I just asked more questions than I answered. Anyway, if you want more information, feel free to ask. :)

That all makes sense to me. Thanks! Yes, I am taking Iodoral. I just started taking it last Friday. I am only taking one a day for a week to see how I react. That equates to 12.5mg, which I think is equivalent to 2 drops of Lugol's. I plan on working up to 4 tablets a day and staying at that does for a few months. I have not been tested for HyptoT. I am going based on the symptoms I've experienced for the last few years. These include, chronic low body temperature, dry skin, excess mucous production, always feeling the need to clear my throat, hoarse voice at times, IBS (constipation), GERD, fatigue, etc. I was also diagnosed with Lyme disease last year and this contributes to the thyroid becoming compromised. One of the leading Lyme specialists in the world suggests that Iodine is the most critical element for people suffering from Lyme disease. In general, Iodine is something we all need in for our body's to function properly. It is estimated that 80% of the population is iodine deficient.

If you have anything to add, please do!

Thanks

Hi again! :)

Just one more thing. You might want to check out research done by Dr Abraham, Dr Brownstein, and Dr Flechas. They're some of the leaders in iodine supplementation research. They also use iodine in their clinical practices to treat a wide variety of health issues, including thyroid disease and even cancer.

Ok, two more things. I also suggest you start reading about iodine protocols. Iodine, in high enough doses, will start to detox halides, particularly bromide. Bromide detox can have a lot of negative symptoms and you need additional supplements to help deal with this. Most folks use a combination of 2000mg vit C, 200mg selenium, 50mg B2, 100mg B3, 200-400mg magnesium, and many also add sea salt water to help flush out the toxins. I didn't start having detox symptoms until I got up to 8 drops and then they hit. I've since started taking 1/4 tsp celtic sea salt in a glass of water twice a day and its helped.

It sounds like you're on the right track. :)

I have read a few articles about these guys. Very interesting stuff. I believe Dr. Abraham takes Iodoral on a daily basis as does his entire family. Did you know Iodine is a powerful anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, anti-viral, anti-fungal? I never knew this. I also learned that Iodine was used before the popular anti-fungal drug Nystatin was introduced. Iodine is very effective against Candida, which most likely contributes to GERD in most people. It is very interesting putting the pieces of the puzzle together.

Yes, I am already taking all of those supplements in and around those amounts. I should be ok there. I fully understand how important detoxing is when it comes to disease because of Lyme.

Thanks

-Dave

What a coincidence for me to find this thread.

I recently wrote that my 19 yr old son has multiple nodule goiter that we will probably have removed. BUT he also has acid reflux....unusual for 19 year old! and sometimes he makes this weird noise like he is clearing mucus deep in his throat. I bet it is all related. He had blood work but it was never mentioned that there was any thyroid malfunction...I will definatly ask the doctor about this.

Thanks for this new thought...this one thing could be the cause of other problems.
