Could not masturbating often enough cuase prostate problems? What are signs that there is something wrong with your prostate?

There are usually no specific signs or symptoms of early prostate cancer -- which is why prostate screening is so important. An annual physical examination, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, and digital rectal exam (DRE) provide the best chance of identifying prostate cancer in its earliest stages.

The following signs and symptoms may be caused by prostate cancer, or by a variety of other conditions. Consult your physician right away if you are experiencing any/all of the following symptoms:

weak or interrupted flow of urine
urinating often (especially at night)
difficulty urinating or holding back urine
inability to urinate
pain or burning when urinating
blood in the urine or semen
nagging pain in the back, hips, or pelvis

As a man gets older, his prostate may grow bigger and block the flow of urine, or interfere with sexual function. Although an enlarged prostate gland -- a condition called benign prostate hyperplasia -- may not be life-threatening, it may require treatment with medicine or surgery to relieve symptoms. This common benign prostate condition, which is not cancer, can cause many of the same symptoms as prostate cancer.

I'M not aware of any credible medical information that links masturbation either too little or too much, (whatever that might be) with either prostate cancer or BPH (enlarged prostate). Prolonged lack of sexual activity can lead to reduced libido however.

There were news reports a few years ago that linked higher sexual activity (ejaculation) with lower risk of prostate cancer. I remember reading the news and more or less dismissing it, as the study was based on decades old memories of participants, and those reporting higher sexual activity in the teens/twenties were reporting MUCH higher, hard-to-imagine higher levels of activity. ;)

However, I was surprised to learn that one of the most esteemed researchers in prostate cancer today thinks there may be a connection. He was not connected with the original research, but he stated that in his own research he has learned that semen is a highly noxious substance when not being used for its purpose. His thinking was that backed up, accumulating semen, might plausibly cause a problem in the prostate. It was clear that he was musing rather than advocating a hypothesis.

The link still seems a stretch to me, but I have great respect for this researcher. He has been a prominent speaker at medical research conventions and was the moderator of a convention on cancer prevention a few years ago.

You can check the medical research on this by going to the free Government site www.pubmed.gov and using a search string like " ejaculation frequency AND prostate cancer ". I just did that, and after flipping on the Limits feature and checking it for "studies with abstracts" and "humans," got 19 hits. The second hit, involving some heavy hitter researchers and a prestigious long running study, found little relationship, but other studies did find some possible relationship.

I did not see the study that got the media excited. I may have missed it, or it may not have had an abstract.
