I am so angry with my mothers doctors. She is 48 years old and had a bone density test done back in May. Well she just got a call from her pharmacist today saying that her prescription of fosomax?, is ready. Here her doctors office lost her result and just found it after over 5 months went by and instead of calling her and telling her that she has osteoporosis they called in a prescription so she found out from her pharmacist. Doesn't that sound like a horrible doctor. My mom has many problems with her back and she has fallen quite a few times in the last few months and even had surgery to repair her knee because of a fall she took. And not one time did this office ever mention osteoporosis. I am sorry I am venting but I am just so angry with her doctor. I actually came on here to read about the illness. Don't you think her doctor is in the wrong?

Hi brooklynngruber: Oh I agree with you this dr is not doing his job!!!! When your mom had surgery did they say anything about the bone being soft or spongy? Usually if a surgeon does some kind of bone surgery on a patient with osteoporosis, they need to know about it up front. If your mom has the type of insurance that lets you switch to someone else I would definitely do that and find a new dr.
Do you know what her t-scores were? Probably not since she had to find out from a PHARMCIST that she has osteoporosis.
If you could get a copy of the dexa scores that would help to understand where she's at with bone loss.
Normal bone is any score above -1.0
Osteopenia is a score between -1.0 and -2.5
Osteoporosis is a score below -2.5
Here's a link to the WHO definitions on osteopenia and osteoporosis. The entire site is very informative-but long, click through it to read about it.

That's disgraceful! She gets a call from the pharmacist......and an Rx for Fosamax.....no discussion of results, no options given. Definitely time to find a new doctor.
Have your Mom get a copy of her T-scores. Tell her to take her time doing some research-maybe read the postings on these boards-then if she truly needs treatment (as Mbeth correctly pointed out, osteopenia doesn't usually need treatment) go with someone who takes the time to explain.
