kianalenai 10-31-2007, 06:04 PM is there anyway the doctor can tell what kind of kidney stone you have without the stone itself? kianalenai 10-31-2007, 06:25 PM I spent my morning in the er finding out i have 3 stones, 2 are just siting in the kidney and one is moving which caused the trip to the er. I have never dealt with this before and i was wondering, is there anyway the doctor can tell what kind of kidney stone you have without the stone itself? The stone i have is 5 mm and im afraid that its going to pass and im not gonna have a clue. Or it might end up in the strainer but i wont notice it. i have no idea what i should be looking for. onekidney 10-31-2007, 09:45 PM The only way to know is with a 24 hour urine test. the metabolic disorder causing the stones will be diagnosed, thusdetermining what kind of stone you have. hopesprings2 11-01-2007, 03:51 PM you will prb see it if it is 5mm some are clear looking like crstals when they first come out then darken when dry some are dark ,tan and red look on google for picture of kidney stones duzford 11-01-2007, 04:43 PM Look for anything that looks like kitty litter -any color. This is your stone. flowergirl2day 11-02-2007, 11:19 AM Hi, I was surprised to learn that practically everyone forms kidney stones. Most are small and passed without any problems, therefore people are not aware of them. I did not know this. I wonder if my calcium supplements can somehow affect or aid in the kidney stone formation. I have been worried about that. duzford 11-02-2007, 12:03 PM I wouldn't be worried. It is a myth that calcium causes stones, it actually helps absorb the oxolate and it prevents stones. If your supplements contain IRON or antioxidants that can contribute to stones. hopesprings2 11-02-2007, 01:28 PM Hi, I was surprised to learn that practically everyone forms kidney stones. I wonder if my calcium supplements can somehow affect or aid in the kidney stone formation. I have been worried about that. i know that advice to try not to take extra calcium if you have these type of stones drink more water than you ever have bananarama 11-02-2007, 07:03 PM Can taking iron due to anemia/iron deficiency cause the stones as well? duzford 11-02-2007, 08:27 PM Yes, as can drinking from non copper or non pcp piping (i.e. well water.) The iron "rusts" inside the kidney causing stones. Iron can cause really big stones. I noticed that when taking pre-natal vitamins I "created" bigger stones. I wanted it to help me create something inside but surely not kidney stones. bananarama 11-02-2007, 08:59 PM That is totally crazy! But I guess the only alternative I have is getting a transfusion, since my iron is SO low. Dang it. Darned if I do and darned if I don't. hopesprings2 11-03-2007, 10:17 AM That is totally crazy! Darned if I do and darned if I don't.ask the doctor we have to have vititims so we have to eat well if we can duzford 11-03-2007, 10:40 AM Daisy if the iron can cause a stone, ask a doctor before stopping it - anemia can be more life threatening then stones. bananarama 11-03-2007, 12:35 PM Yeah. And I was told my iron deficiency is really bad. One of the worst cases the doctor at Mayo had ever seen. I guess I will just have to suck up the pain. flowergirl2day 11-04-2007, 11:04 AM Thanks for the info, 2plus. I take vitamin E and other antioxidants daily to keep the free radicals from doing too much harm in the arteries & elsewhere. I also drink black & green tea and eat a lot of fruit & veggies. I guess instead of worrying about the calcium supplements contributing to the creation of kidney stones, I should worry about the antioxidants I take doing the same. As painful as kidney stones can be, they are not life threatening unlike clogged arteries. There's always something for us to worry about. Geez, one just can't win. :( hopesprings2 11-04-2007, 02:13 PM it kinda give and take they arent life threating ,however they can be big damage to the kidneys. So that is a very big deal.I would just eat normal and not add anything to it.Drink lots of water and see what the doctor says about what extra to take or not bananarama 11-04-2007, 04:21 PM That's a good idea. I am going back to the doctor in 2 weeks, so I will see what he says then about these many issues that seem to contradict themselves treatmentwise. |
