Had bunion removed on 5/20/03 -- right foot. They also found a nerve tumor (morton's neuroma) which they removed. I can put my foot down flat finally - just in the last two weeks though. Not supposed to walk barefoot for at least 3 months. I had an absorbable pin in my toe, bone removed from the side and top of toe.
Today is my first full day in sneakers and it's starting to bug me a little. I need to get a wider width sneaker. The stitching is what's bothering my toe.
Been going to physical therapy for 3 weeks now twice a week. Don't know where I'd be without it. They give me exercises and stretches to do at home. I get ionic treatments there (electronic device patches in antiinflamatory and painkiller). To reduce the swelling i have to do a contrast bath. 30 seconds in ice cold water (yes, there must be ice cubes!) and then 1 min in lukewarm water, do that three times, end in cold and wrap with ace bandage as tight as i can. This actually feels so good i look forward to doing it.
And yes, it does still hurt. I'm massaging the scar as much as possible so there is no buildup of tissue. Mostly, it's tender.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi. I had surgery almost a year ago (August 22, 2002), and I still cannot put my foot down flat on the floor. You should discuss your concerns with your doctor, and do not let him put your concerns aside! My doctor did not approve physical therapy even though I asked for it, and I know that made my recovery far worse than it had to be. I have so many problems now that I didn't have prior to the bunionectomy (back pain, hip pain, etc) because I am not able to put my foot flat on the floor and my weight is not evenly distributed. If you feel like you need to, by all means, talk to your doctor and make sure you are taken seriously!
