View Full Version : sesamoidectomy scheduled

Well, I went ahead and scheduled my sesamoidectomy today. It will be on November 26, just in time for the holidays! I have been waffling back and forth for awhile about doing it, hoping that my foot had gotten a little bit better, and while I can now get a shoe on I still can't bear weight for more than a few minutes and simple essential chores like driving and grocery shopping are impossible, so I've decided to go ahead with it. I just can't see living the rest of my life like this. My family needs their mom and wife back!

I was lucky to find a great surgeon (I hope) who made me feel a lot more confident about my decision while at the same time not making unrealistic promises. He has had a sesamoidectomy himself so he can feel my pain! It will be an incision through the bottom of my foot so I'll be nonweightbearing for three weeks. I'm not worried about the surgery or recovery itself - I've unfortunately had plenty of experience with surgeries and long recoveries and know the pitfalls - pain, boredom, depression, frustration... I hope I can keep my spirits up this time. I'm mostly afraid of the surgery not working or making things worse. I know from experience the hardest part will be getting function back and my doctor is a big fan of physical therapy so I hope that will help.

I know a couple of you recently had sesamoidectomies and are in the process of healing. Please keep me abreast of your progress. It really helps during this waiting time. Did any of you have casts? (I forgot to ask my Dr. this.) How bad was the pain? Was there a lot of swelling? How long did you have to elevate? Will I feel like getting out of the house after a week or will I still be really uncomfortable? I'm not a wimp with pain, but like to know what I'm getting myself into! Thanks!
