Who are the top epilepsy surgeons in the country? What hospitals have
the best epilepsy treatment centers?

Hi Rosa, I live in Jersey and had Right Anterior Temporal Lobectomy 7 months ago and been free since, it was the best decision I could have made after living with Complex partial seizures for 20 yrs. Neuro will decrease my meds in 5 months. In Jersey one of the best Surgeons are in JFK Neuroscience Center in Edison, NJ which you can also look up on the website and my surgeon Dr.Bloomfield. he did a great job with me and u cant tell i had surgery. Like I said the surgery was so recent but Im back to myself and happier than ever. I wish you the best of luck in all your decisions, and we are here to help ;)

I have read that if you have complex partials and grandmals
that you would not be a candidate for surgery,which I do have
both.Is that true?My doctor has referred me to an Epilepsy Center
in Fl. called the Shands Center.They will do further testing and
decide if I can have surgery or just a VNS.My appt will not be
until Jan.,that was the soonest they could get me in.
Any info. will be appreciated.Thankyou. Sherri

Sherri thats not all true, at least in my case I had complex partial on the right side and had surgery 7 months ago and Im now free. It depends on what lobe of the brain triggers ur spells and what can b affected if u underwent the surgery. For many people with grand mal seizures the VNS work very well to control the spells, but others dont have the option of using this device, like me I had sclerosis and could only have surgery. I suggest you go to this center and speak with the neuro about all the test necessary to determine which option ur a candidate for and which one will work better for u. Ofcourse it will atke some time and many studies but there's gotta be a better treatment for your seizures. Best of luck to you

Thank you so much for the info. I do plan on still going
and seeing what they can do for me.I did a little research
online and that was the info. I found.I am afraid of anything
else other than a VNS,but,we'll see what they have to tell me.
I cannot remember if the website stated any certain parts of
your brain,but,what you said does make sense.

Francilla, I've beeen just fine-don't post as much as I used to-I'm HAPPY to hear/read that all is going good for you! I'm doing great-no seizures since 2003! Isn't that surgery great!?! I've started a new job-with a local homecare/nursing co.-I go to clients home to care for them-run errands-take the shopping/dr apt etc..... How are you doing??

I hear that the Shands Center in Gainesville Florida is an
excellent choice,they have a special center that is just
for Epilepsy.I will be going there myself in January.

Cher Im doing just great.. 8 months since surgery and seizure free!!!! b getting off the meds in 4 months.. Wow I still cant believe it went so good aside from all the pain, but happy my life has changed for the better, and hopefully next year I cant have a child, been talking to the neuro about it.. There are a few in the Minneapolis MN area for Epilepsy In Hospital observation. Mincep (suburb of Minneapolis for location) MEG in St Paul; and Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology west of Minneapolis. All three are respected. The first two are well known nationwide.

The Clinic in Ohio (Cincinnati's or is it Cleveland... now I'm drawing a blank) I spoke with a Dr who is doing his intern;
that clinic is one of the top 5 in the nation for Neurology.

Having never been at the Mayo Hospital, I only have hearsay but am told if you can get in it is a GREAT hospital of talent.

It's so good to hear from you both. Sorry I have been so long...my computer has been giving me trouble, still have dial-up due to the area I live, so sometimes it's easier just to ignore the irritating thing. Just kidding, this site has been such a comfort, especially right after my daughter's right temporal lobectomy in Dec. 2006. It is so important to hear others are seizure free.

It has been a year since surgery and she is doing great!!! No seizures and feeling wonderful. I'm thrilled to hear both of you are good.... MERRY CHRISTMAS! Nan
