Hi,
My colon resection surgery is scheduled for Nov. 14. I have gotten some excellent advice and support on this board in previous posts about my situation and have another question. I talked to my doctor today and asked if I would be on antibiotics prior to the surgery and he said no, that I would have antibiotics suring and afterwards, but to prescribe them prior to surgery can cause other problems. I have been on cipro/Flagyl in the past and was surprised that I would not be on some kind again prior to the surgery. I am wondering if other people who have had this surgery were on antibiotics before the surgery or if someone knows why I would not be on them. Thanks for sharing any information or your experience.

All the best for your surgery on the 14th! My husband only had antibiotics after surgery. I am not sure of the reason why antibiotics are not given before but maybe someone else can enlighten us! How are you feeling? I guess you will be glad when it is over!

Love,

Hello,
I hope everything goes well for your surgery. I know it will. My dad had rectal resection and he was on antibiotics before, during and after surgery. Don't know why. Because he was in hospital 7 days after surgery and then was home for about 8 days and had to go back because he developed a bad infection and was on strong iv antibiotics for 28 days.?? Who knows. I think each doctor have their own way of thinking.

my husband was given antibiotics during his surgery and afterwards and not before. There must be a reason for it but I am not sure what it is.
I hope all goes well with your surgery.

I was given antibiotics after surgery but only because they thought I had a bladder infection from having the catheter in too long. I guess every surgeon and every patient is different, there doesn't seem to be a standard procedure.
