Hi im 38 and have had moderate acne for 20 years and tried everything including accutane. After researching on the net have just got my GP to reluctantly prescribe me spiro. She has given me 25mg daily for a month and will then review. Has anyone had any joy with such a low dose?

That's a VERY low dose to be effective for acne. My endocrinolgist said that 100 mg is usually necessary. I'd defeinitely ask your GP to start you on a higher dose, or bump you up quickly.

I have to go back for review next week so I will ask her to increase it. No improvement with reducing my oily skin yet, but I have started with a rash around the top of my legs, its like small pinkish dry areas of skin, not itchy or painful. I have continued to take the spiro but will mention it to GP next week.

Unfortunatley have had to stop taking the spiro as the rash spread to chest and neck and ended up looking worse than the acne. Back to the drawing board. DAMN :(

Sharon-
That's interesting you mention the rash as I am on spiro too and was on a dose of 150mg for about a month when all of a sudden I developed these horrible hives that drove me mad. All over my body one second and I would be itching like crazy and they would subside. My doctor told me to take claritin and I have been rid of those hives but I wonder if they are attributed to spiro ... spiro has been working for me but I am not 100% clear. It's only been two months though ...

I just wanted to comment. As a long time user to spironolactone (2 or 3 years) It is still working for me and my skin is absolutely beautiful. I'm 38 and have always had adult acne. Enough that it affected whether I would go to a social event. I had a child once ask me what was all over my face.
Anyways, my acne did become a little worse when I first start spiro, but by the 2nd month it just got better and better. I don't breakout anymore unless I forget to take my pills. I take 100mg 2x daily.
Also I do remember being quite dry and getting a few headaches when I first started but that went away. I was really determined to follow thru because of the science behind the process. I have heard of others getting a rash or hives from spiro but I have never experienced that. It has slightly affect my monthly periods.
