We all know strontium ranalate has great reviews and is for sale in UK but awaiting approval in US and Canada ... so everyone now is running out to buy the supplement form of strontium citrate while waiting ...but do we have anyone out there that can tell us that yes citrate is just as good????????

Hi canna and welcome to the board.. its the strontium in SR that is the important ingredient. The renalate is a salt added to make it patentable. Since stroinum is a natural substance and can't be patented alone they have to add something that will make it acceptable for prescription use. I've been taking strontium citrate for over a year and showed bone density improvement in both total hip and lumbar spine. I don't know if the citrate is better than any of the other forms or not, but it seems to be working for me. take care...phyllis

Hi Phylwill1152,

Happy 55th Birthday this month!

No luck at the nickel slot machine, maybe November will be luckier for you than October was for me!

I can finally get my bone density test done this month, it's passed the two year mark since my last test, I hope my numbers are at least no worse than two years ago, then I would be happy and consider myself lucky. If not, maybe it will time for me to get strontium, we'll see......

I have the choice to get my DEXA scan in a local hospital on the same machine as two years ago, or get tested on a machine at a hospital which specializes in osteoporosis treatment. Which machine do you think I should choose?

Hi Jacal5...i've always heard that you're supposed to use the same machine, with the same tech everytime if possible. I think thats because different machines would give different readings and using the same one would at least be consistent. If you'd get better care at the osteo center and would be using it for future scans go there. Seems to me a place that specializes in osteo would be better informed and more helpful than a hospital x-ray dept. where all they do is the scan and send it off to be read. Could you find out if they use the same type machines. If you decide on the center take your copy of the scores you had 2 years ago so they could have some basis for comparison. Would your insurance cover both places?

I forget..have you been taking one of the osteo meds or trying for imporvements with diet and exercise? thnaks for the early bday greeting..its the 21st so i'll be spending my day cooking and getting ready for the kids to come home. its also our grandaughters bday so i'll make her a cake. take care...phyllis

Hi Canna from Canada, and welcome! I'm another strontium user. I believe the recommended amount is 600-something mg/day; my tablets are 227mg and I take 2/day.
As far as being "sure" about strontuim citrate vs a laboratory-synthesized product, I'd opt for the supplement version. There are some who would disagree, preferring a prescription medication version. However, there was a post not so long ago which correctly pointed out that, in order for a pharmaceutical company to patent a medication, they had to chemically alter it as they cannot make $$ from vitamin/mineral supplements. Chemically altered.....could that be why so many of them have side effects:(?

Your welcome, I'm still recovering from my birthday party and Halloween, I did a lot of work for both occasions and was on my feet a lot, good for bone density, but not my back or injured knee.

I think I will go to the osteo center after reading your reply, the only drawback is the facility is 45 miles from my house, but the ride isn't that bad to make every two years. I heard the center has a six month wait for an appointment with an osteo doc! I'm on Medicare, they will pay for a DEXA no matter where I go, as long as I have a script.

My mom needed a bone density test last month so I called the local hospital where she had her test done two years ago to make sure it was the same machine. Back then their machine only did one side of the body but the person in radiology told me the machine does both sides now. I asked if that meant the machine was still the same and she said yes, it's just a software change. I didn't know if I should believe her so I called the osteo center, and the rep said it definitely was not the same machine!!! Mom went to another facility to get her scan.

No, I'm not on any osteo drugs, I'm trying E-Zorb, appropriate supplements, weight lifting, and diet change.

Hi canna...i take NSI Strontium, which i buy online. The dose for that brand is 2 340 mg. caps a day taken at bedtime, away from caclium and on an empty stomach. The bottle says it can be taken with food. I take it on an empty stomach most of the time for better absorbtion and at bedtime so it has plenty of time to do it thing before i get up and take other meds and start eating.

What is didrocal? I'm not familiar with that one..is it like the others or something different? take care...phyllis

Thanks, Starfish from Ontario.. I have read so many reviews re Strontium citrate that it is my intention to purchase it. I was hestitant at first but so much positive feedback. Keep it coming strontium users! I have looked at prices in Alberta roughly $36 for 90 tabs but wondering is there better prices in Ontario as I am in Atlantic Canada.. Maritimes . It is not like it is an easy product to buy in my neck of the woods. any info will help

Hi Phylwill.. Didrocal is not as strong as Fosamax and Actenel but in that family. I know people on it for years and it did not work. You take a white tablet a day at bedtime with water for 14 days at least 2 hours before or after eating(instructions given) After finishing the white tablets you take a blue tablet each day for 76 days and repeat. The blue one contains 500 elemental calcium (carbonate) But I don't have much faith in them as my sister and cousin were on it and it did not work. It was out before the Fosomax so I need to get Strontium! Takecare, Canna

Hi canna...the NSI strontium i use can be found online. its $19.99 for 120 caps, which is a 2 month supply. there are several good brands out there, but this one has the best price and for me it works. Can you buy it in stores there? i've never been able to find here, which is why i order online.

Thanks for the info n didrocal, i've never heard of it. take care...phyllis

Guess what board users... Another strontium user.....I ordered the strontium citrate for my osteoporosis after reading all the good reviews. I am coming off my Didrocal and going on strontium. Ordered it from Alberta. Now.. I need to know which kind of calcium is most tolerable with acid reflux I am thinking citrate and what amounts is everyone taking??

Hi Canna...WELCOME  TO THE TAKE MATTERS INTO OUR OWN HANDS CLUB ...there seems to be a growing number of people trying strontium. a friend of mine just started taking it after i told her about it and about my results. I figure if each of us tells a friend or two that eventually TPTB will take notice and recognise that its a viable choice for those not wanting to go the tradtional route.

I take calcium carbonate, but i don't have any stomach problems to contend with. Calcium citrate is easier on the stomach and can be taken either with or without food. What brand strontium did you end up getting? take care...phyllis

Hi Phylwill.. I ordered from a company in Alberta made through AOR... all natural... called Strontium Support with 341mg per capsule $36 for 90 caps but they phoned this evening and are out of stock for 4 or 5 days. The lady told me that it is a very popular item. Am thankful for people like you.. it is great to hear how other people are doing and to get advice and opinions and to know we are not alone.

Hey Canna-AOR is the brand I'm using too. Am happy with it so far even if it is more expensive. Question for U: when you ordered it, did you get it shipped to your Canadian address? That may sound silly, but when I ordered it, the website stated that it "could not be shipped to a Canadian address at this time". That was back in Sept, maybe things are different now. I come to the US for other treatments, so it was no problem to ship it elsewhere.

Starfish... I ordered it by phone .. no problem to ship it to my Canadian address however they are out of stock for another few days but shipping was not a problem.. shipping is free if you buy $100 worth so I bought 3 containers rather than trying to get it every month. She said the stock is pretty popular.

Hello Peppurr when I ordered the Strontium from a vitamin company in Alberta the lady told me they have increased mg per capsule .. The ones I purchased have 341 mg per capsule. Do you take 2 per day and at what time of day do you find the best for taking????

I'm catching up here - interesting about the realate being a salt. Does that mean you will retain water, I'm wondering.
I just went through putting on 10 lbs with using Fosamax for only 11 weeks. I quit about 3 weeks ago and still have 4 lbs to lose.
I was planning on going with the Renalate when it's approved here but I don't want to go through this weight gain again.

Hi, everyone,

I am not sure if I have posted on this forum before, or not. I think I just registered yesterday -- not sure.

Anyway, I have taken Strontium Citrate for about 6-7 months. That is because an AED, Tegretol, (anti-epileptic drug, which was used as a mood-stabilizer in my case) likely caused me to get osteoporosis.

I have n ot gained any weight on Strontium Citrate. I buy it in the USA from Doctor's Best. It's pretty reasonable.

Are there any scientific studies anyone has seen in a medical journal about whether it works or not? For those out there in Forumland who have found your osteoporosis has improved, do you have the "numbers"? Like, say, you were -3.0 and now you are -2.5, for instance? My numbers are -3.5, -3.5, -2.9 all of these are bad numbers. I forget what normal is -- is that a zero = 0?

Hi Flowerseeds:

Normal bone is any score above -1
Osteopenia is any score between -1 and -2.5
Osteoporosis is any score below -2.5

Here's the WHO link that explains it.
