View Full Version : Anybody try Domperidone?

My reflux was very bad, and the only thing that has helped me avoid having surgery was reglan.
Reglan, unfortunately as many of you know, has side effects like restlessness.
Because of this, I could only take 2 rather than 4 per day as was recomended.
Other than that, it worked just great to keep the LES valve closed.

My doctor told me about Domperidone on my last visit.
He said it is similar to reglan, but doesn't have the side effects.
Somthing about not crossing the blood-brain barrier.

The only catch is that it is not available in the US and is not FDA approved so insurance will not cover it.
He showed me how to get it online, and i ordered it from one of those Canadian pharmacies.

So far, it seems to be as effective as the reglan, but it's only been 2 weeks.
I don't notice any side effects yet either.

Just curious if anybody else tried this medication.

Maybe some of those that had side effect problems with reglan can check with their doctors about using Domperidone.

Andy.

Hi Andy

I have been taking domperidone for about a year and I find it works not too bad. I am not familiar with reglan but maybe it's not available in Canada.
I have been on alot of rounds of prednisone and it has made my stomach really bad. Just out of interest do you take the domperidone before meals?

Good luck and let me know how things are going.

Your doctor is right. Reglan can cause extreme irritability (been there, done that) and depression. Domperidone only caused me to be a bit sleepy. I've heard that compounding pharmacies in the US can make it, but I'm not sure.

I've dealt with stomach issues for years...I hope you feel better soon!

Hi Andy, I have been on domperidone for over a year now. I had the same problems with reglan and finally got to the point where I just couldnt take it. I love domperidone, I find the side affects are very minimal. I did note that it seemed to take a while before I really saw the benefits of it, like a month or two. Stick with it if you can. There are a few pharmacies in USA that will fill it but my insurance company wouldnt cover it cause it wasnt FDA approved. But I think it is very reasonable from Canada. At least it isnt hundreds of dollars.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I just switched back to reglan last night because it seems the domperidone isn't working as well. Maybe I should stay with it longer before I give up, but my throat was burning.

I take 1 domperidone before dinner along with a Nexium, and 1 more domperidone just before bed.

On reglan, many times I could skip the one at bedtime and not have any problems. I would still have that swallowing crunching noise at times though.

I know you are supposed to take 4 per day, but I never needed that many, and the side effects were too much.

Hmm, maybe I should try the 4 per day on Domperidone, I don't know.
That would mean I would need to remember to carry them with me during the day. I can give this a try I guess.

You are right Sam, it isn't that expensive even without insurance.
Can you tell me how many, and when you take them?
How about you Suzie and Christine?

Hi

I take 4 a day before meals and before bedtime. When I have it really bad my dr says I can double up on them. I am lucky I have insurance that pays for all of it.

Is the domperidone a motility drug like Reglan. I took Reglan when I first got sick but it made me zombie like and there are some long term side effects I was concerned about. Propulsid worked great for me but got pulled off the market. My Dr's haven't mentioned Domperidone to me. Do you take it in addition to PPIs. Thanks for your help.

Hi Charla,
Yes, it's a motility drug like reglan.
It can be taken with PPI's or other drugs.
In my case, I get relief if I take it with Nexium.

Ask your doctor about it.

Andy
