DH had an SA today and his count was only 200,000.

I'm CD 4 so this cycle is a bust, but next cycle we'll hopefully try IVF. IUI isn't an option as the count is so drastically low. DH will try and see a urologist ASAP so that if he's got a simple, correctable problem that's causing his low count, they can do the fix.

The good news is that in Massachusetts, our insurance only covers infertility treatments (such as IVF) after 12 months of trying OR a diagnosis of impaired fertility (IE DH's super-low sperm count).

Still, I'm pretty much devestated that it's not gonna happen naturally for us. :(

Hey Daisies

My heart goes out to you, I really do know how you feel. I too will be starting my 1st IVF cycle soon and although I know it will be stressfull, I am looking fwd to getting that BFP, and that is what I'm focusing on. Being that you are early in this cycle you may find that like me you will start your cycle in the new year, if so hopefully we will be celebrating our BFP's together. Although I would never wish this on anyone its nice to have an IVF sister. All the best.

First I wouldnt just jump on that just yet. You have to remember the sample he gave was produced three months ago. Which means if he had a cold a slight fever or anything along those lines then that could have effected his count. In other words dont go by just one SA. Get another one done. Have him talk to urologist asap. Also your cycle isnt a bust yet you two can still have fun. You never know what might happen.
My dh has had several SAs done over the years...different drs different labs..got to love the military can really throw a kink into ttc. Anyway his first two were great. A third one came back funny not bad numbers but slow, deformed and so on. So off to a urologist he went. Odd experience to tag along on that visit. Anyway that dr found a small varicocele. He said it needed to be taken care of because it could be the cause of the poor SA. Well about 6 months later another SA came back good and a different dr couldnt find the varicocele.
So dont hang up the towel just yet. Get dh on some vitamins make sure he is wearing the right underwear and avoiding hottubs and such. See what the urologist has to say. Above all get another SA done.

Well, with his numbers being SO low, they don't think that it's a fluke or caused by a cold or anything. It is most likely a blockage or hormonal imbalance.

If the blockage is not reversible, and it is not hormonal, then IVF (the kind where they inject the sperm directly into the egg) is our only option to have biological children.

I know what IVF is. Im just saying you dont have to jump the gun on labeling either him or yourself as subfertile. If you go by numbers alone I have a cousin and my son has a few friends that shouldnt be here based on SA numbers alone. My uncle was actually told he would never have kids cause his count was so low they just labeled it zero. I kid you not I saw the actual paperwork. So he figured he didnt have to worry about protection low and behold his then gf got pregnant.
With my own son's various friends we foudn over the years that people will open up and talk about infertility. And there are quite a few guys running around with low counts but still manage to get their wives pregnant.

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to say you didn't know what IVF was, I meant that there are apparently two kinds (according to my doctor) the kind where they put eggs and sperm in a dish and let them do their thing, and the kind where they don't trust the sperm's ability to get past the egg's barrier, so they inject it. ICSI, I believe it's called, rather then straight-up IVF.

I pray for a miracle like the ones your family has had, but don't expect one.
