Were any of you able to get back into your old shoes EVENTUALLY? Or did you have to buy new ones?

Well, last night, for the first time I tried on a regular pair of shoes and they fit just fine.I am 8 weeks post-op. Now, I couldn't tell you before this time if they would have fit or not..since this was my first attempt. I talked to my doc today and asked him if I could start wearing regular shoes as I am getting weary of this boot and it felt good not to have it on last night. He said, yes, I can..just make sure I wear reg shoes (such as a gym shoe) with the toe separator. It's been 6 months for one of my feet and I still need a whole size bigger shoe. I don't have any more swelling in my right foot, but I think they stretched the joints etc. when repairing my foot. I doubt I'll ever go back to my old size. Paininthefoot icarus0812 09-20-2003, 10:34 PM Yes, I did eventually get back into my old shoes, but it took a LONG time...almost eight months! I had extreme swelling in my foot that didn't go away for eight months after my bunion surgery. I actually still get some swelling once in a while (i'm 13 months post-op), but only when I am on my feet for 10 hours or more at work. Overall, my foot is slightly smaller than it was before the surgery. But I still wear the shoes I wore before the surgery. Good luck!

The style of the shoe is actually what determines my size. Luckily, I was able to keep most of my shoes (the well-made ones, that is!) I had to toss a couple of cheap pairs that looked cute when I bought them, but never really felt quite right even before the surgery. My foot is narrower in the front now that the bunion is gone, so in styles that run narrow and long I can wear my regular size. Because my big toe is straight, no longer pointing inward, I need 1/2 size bigger in shoe styles that run short. Otherwise I can feel the big toe hitting the front of the shoe. I can't wear styles that have a very flat front, because now I'm really conscious of how cramped the toes feel in them. After what I sent through with the surgery and recovery, I want to be comfortable! Good luck, Chris |
