My 14 year old son went to a walk in clinic yesterday for a basketball physical. His overall physical went perfectly fine, but his urine test has raised some questions. I will post exactly what it says:

Specific Gravity: 1.020
PH 5
Leukocytes +
Nitrite Neg
Protein +++
Glucose Neg
Ketones Neg
Urobilinogen Neg
Bilibrubin Neg
Blood Pos

The dr. at the walk in clinic was concerned about his protein in the urine. The blood can only be seen by a microscope. We have an apt. tomorrow with our regular dr. to see what is going on. He has no pain when he urinates, no sensation that he needs to go and not go, so I doubt it is a bladder infection. Otherwise, he is a very active 14 year old who doesn't show any signs of anything being wrong. I am VERY concerned that something is wrong with his kidneys because of this 3+ protein in his urine. Any suggestions?

He may have an infection or stones, this is the most common cause of elevated protein. Sometimes kidney infections are very asymptomatic. It would also explain the + reading for leukocytes.

It can also be becuase he is an athlete - this can sometimes through of the results. Is he using any supplements to get him ready for b-ball season like the ones you get an GNC or the Vitamin shop. I can't remmeber the name of them.
