I will be getting bunion surgery I believe on one foot in November. And the second in March. The doctor was gonna do 2 to get it over with, but I didn't want to be in a wheel chair for 6-8 weeks he said. I will have to have screws placed in the feet and Im terrified. I am an office manager so after 1 or 2 weeks I am going back to work and propping my foot up at work. Will I ever be able to exercise again with the screw in my foot? Will I feel it? Will I be in extreme amounts of pain? How logn to heal for each foot? All the help you can give please! By the way, I am 23 years old.

What type of surgery are you suppose to have. I have 2 screws in my ankle and I don't feel them. I will have another surgery soon and will have some put in my heel ( calcaneous ). It probably will depend on where the screws are put at along with other things. When I had my ankle reconstructed, I was in a cast for 6 weeks ( on crutches for a week ) and in a cam walker for another 6 weeks. With this surgery ( subtalar fusion ) I'm going to be having, I will be in a cast for 14 weeks ( on crutches for 6-8 weeks ) and in the cam walker for another 3 months IF everything goes well.

Hi! My surgery was Sept. 15. I have two screws in my foot and you know what? I didn't even know where they were until I saw the x-rays yesterday. I thought, from the pain, they were up in the toe and put in sideways, but they are really in the foot and put in from the top of the foot facing down. In fact, where they are is about the only place I haven't felt pain! So, my guess is you won't even know they are there. You shoud be able to do everything you did before. I'm a huge fan of exercise myself and this lolling about is just killing me, but everyone from my doctor to my two sisters who also had bunions all say the same thing: We just have to be patient. Argh!

P.S. You're young, so you probably have pretty good bone density. That will probably help. If you've been doing weight-bearing exercises all along, that's even better. I have a sneaking suspicion it's making a big difference for me, since I did aerobics with a step and weights (the Firm) for almost a year before the surgery. I'm 36 and the doc said I have really good bone density. Maybe that's why I'm healing so well.

I didn't know the bone density part, thank you! I try to do the stair climber 5-6 days a week for 30 minutes, I kick box one time a week and lift weights. I hope it will have paid off, lol....
