Hello!

Just want to say thanks to everyone - these boards are great and people are so supportive! So happy I found them!

I will be have bunion surgery. I talked to my Dr. and he said because I am young and travel a lot - he wants to put a surgical pin in rather than screws.

This will mean a piece of metal coming out of my foot for FOUR to SIX weeks!! aagghhh! This is alarming me a bit! During this time I will not walk properly - just on my heals or side of my foot. I think I may use cructches as I don't want to damage another section of me foot!

Has anyone had this done or heard of it??

Thanks!

Hi, I am to have surgery in several months too and I am 45. The doctor wants to put a pin in my toe too because of age. I don't know much else about it right now but like you I am kind wondering what it will be like. Sorry I couldn't help you more. Polly

Hi! I had surgery on the left foot Aug 7th, I have a 2 1/2" scar from the bottom of the big toe down. I had 2 pins to the left of the scar that were removed 2 weeks after surgery along with the stitches; that's also when I was finally able to take a bath (I didn't shower 'cause I didn't have the stability to stand by myself and I was afraid I'd end up in the ER from a fall in the shower)!!! I've been in a surgical shoe with a splint and it's only been about 6 weeks. I couldn't use crutches (I tend to lean forward; also I'm barely 5' tall and they were uncomfortable for me). I used a walker and when I did get to go out I had the use of a wheelchair. I needed help for the first week and a half to get my meals and help getting to the bathroom. I am thrilled I had the surgery. On Oct 16th I'm going back to have the right bunion removed--I can't wait! I am so pleased with the work that my surgeon did. My scar is practically fading (I load up with vitamin E-the liquid not the vitamins it's a lot less messier. Every once in a while I feel a little twinge where the bunion was. If you ice the area often, keep it elevated and take the meds your dr prescribed (I use Advil) I think you'll do fine. Good luck to you both. The message boards help with suggestions from others.
