My last menstrual cycle was the second week of August, it is now November, I am being married this thanksgiving. I have had no health insurance with my last job. My husband to be, has just started working as a plumber in the union with benefits through group health. I'm worried this is a preexisting condition and was told not to see a Doctor before I'm married and added to his insurance. Should I wait, or go to DSHS now to see about getting help with this and to see a Doc?

First of all, congrats on your pregnancy! Don't wait for his insurance. See if you can get some form of medical assistance. You have already missed essential prenatal care. I'm guessing DSHS is this kind of service. Go now!! By the time his insurance kicks in, you will be more than half way through your pregnancy. Don't wait!!!

I would say the same thing as Florencita except I am kinda in the same boat. I got a new job and found out I was pregnant. I found out that since I am pregnant and it was documented before my health insurance was to kick in that it is considered a pre-existing condition. Thank goodness I found this out before i shelled out a lot of money for the insurance. Now I am trying to get on medicaid but am not sure I will get it because of the amount of money I make. So just weigh your options before going to the doctor. I was advised after I found all of this out that if you do not have insurance yet you should treat your body very healthy for the first 8 weeks. Take prenatals and do all the pregnant stuff you are supposed to do. Then once the insurance starts you can go to the doctor. Only let it go for 8 to 10 weeks though. No more then that because the doctor will want to do an ultrasound at 10 weeks to make sure everything is okay. Good Luck and believe me this advice is not easy to give because I was the first to jump the gun and go to the doctor. But now I wish I had waited so I could get medical insurance.

CONGRATS on your pregnancy!!! I agree with the other posters about trying to get DSHS until your husband-to-be's insurance kicks in. I'm not sure about all the rules for that on being added to his insurance if you're already pregnant, but my Fiance has Group Health and we were talking about if we got married before our baby is born (March 3rd) then I should be covered, so I don't know why you wouldn't be able to. I don't think it matters if you're pregnant...if the two of you are married, you should be able to be able to be added and see a Dr. and have most of the major expenses covered. I could be wrong as I'm not an insurance expert. I am currently on DSHS since we're not married yet. I know it does take some time to get on ins. with them as they seem to take their time with most cases.
Your best bet would be to try to go to the Dr. and tell them you've applied for DSHS & are waiting for approval (or are waiting for your hubby's insurance, whichever you choose to do) and ask if you can sign some sort of paper that promises you will pay if the insurance denies coverage you for some reason.
That is what I did with my 1st pg since I was already 2 months when I found out and didn't want to wait another month to get my medical coupon. I don't know if every Dr. office does this, but it's worth asking.

sometimes it depends on the insurance. i didn't get insurance until i was four months pregnant. i paid outright for doctor's visits until this time. my insurance said that they did not consider pregnancy a preexisting condition. however, some do. can you possibly have your soon to be husband call his insurance company and ask?
