Hello-

I am curious as to what tests I need to ask my doctor for to rule out any medical conditions that may be a cause of my anxiety. Although I have suffered from anxiety for sometime, I have never had any medical tests. I just assumed that it was cognitive or something similiar.

I remember when I first saw the doctor for my anxiety, she intially asked if I had ever had my thyroid tested. I told her no, but she never pushed the point any further. Now I am thinking it might be a good idea to do this before going further w/cognitive therapy and anti-anxiety meds.

I am pretty unfamiliar w/what to ask for... hormonal tests, etc? Any help would be appreciatated, thank you!

I had a cat scan, abdominal scan, 7 different blood tests, EKG, heart monitor, thyroid exams, chest xray, colonoscopy, the whole shabangabang. If it will ease your mind to get the test done do it. Also you might want to ask your Dr. for blood work to rule out hypoglycemia, which causes a lot of anxiety. Not trying to make you worry, because i think everything in the book is wrong with me, but all those tests i mentioned come back fine. I still am very anxious and not convinced I have anxiety. Just some advice, if you really feel bad and it's taking control of your life, get the tests just to ease your mind. What are your symptoms?

Thanks for your help. I was just wondering if there were a few 'standard' sort of tests that I should take. It especially occured to me as I was driving down the road yesterday: I felt fine, all was well... but I had this horrible anxious feeling in my stomach. I couldn't even pinpoint what I was anxious about, I was just... anxious.

As far as other symptoms... cold hands and feet, fatigue, muscle aches, tension headaches, sinus problems, cracks on the corners of my mouth, feeling overwhelmed, trouble brushing my teeth in the morning, and of course, constant anxiety and worrying. There are probably others as well, but this has come on gradually since I was about 16 (but gotten much worse in the past few years).

I'm not saying I don't just have anxiety... I'm sure I do. However, I just want to make sure there isn't something else compounding the problem.

You could ask to have your thyroid checked. Although if it were that, you'd probably be experiencing more symptoms.
