I've been having a lot of trouble with vision in one eye (which is why I had an MRI that showed lesions and was told one possibility is MS...but I don't have a definitive diagnosis yet). I was told to keep track of any symptoms, and am scheduled for another MRI in a few months. My vision has been worse this week, and my eyeball just plain hurts. I've read about pain associated with
optic neuritis...where is that pain located? Is it where the optic nerve is, or is it hard to tell?

Thanks for your help!

Hi, for me it has been my right eye consistently. I have light sensitivity issues and pain. My pain is in the eyeball and it radiates to my temporal region and continues to radiate back. I use accupressure on the pain site and it has helped a lot. I have had no help but sunglasses for the light sensitivity. My neuro tells me to keep on doing what I am doing because it works- for me. I hope this helps!

Kay, this can be a little tricky because the feeling of ON can vary from person to person. That said, my case of ON was classic so I'll describe that. The pain sensation kind of felt like it was behind the eye -- best described as a dull pain but it was worse and absolutely noticeable with movement and it eventually graduated to increasing blurriness. However, when I went to the eye doctor the first time the blurriness wasn't as noticeable as it became and until that day (when I was first tested) I had no idea what I wasn't seeing in my peripheral vision or color. Again, in a textbook case it starts out with pain, impairment gradually increases and as recovery happens, it reverses itself. (As a truly unscientific home test, pick up something bright red or orange and look at it out of one eye at a time -- notice any difference?)

If you're experiencing eye pain, I would definitely recommend that you get to the eye doctor ASAP. DON'T wait. Who ordered your MRI and told you to watch your sx (what type of doctor)?

An opthamologist ordered the MRI, and a neurologist is the one I was then sent who told me to watch symptoms, and get another MRI in January. The neurologist also ordered a spinal tap, and is the one who told me he thinks MS is a distinct possibility. Since my eye hurts, I think I'll call his office tomorrow to see whether he wants me to come back in. Thanks for the replies.

Kay, similar to the route I followed. Visit to the ophthalmologist, referral to a neuro-ophthalmologist, who confirmed ON and ordered an MRI and sent me off with a referral to an MS specialist However, through a series of (fortunate!) circumstances, I went to a new and improved neuro0ophthalmologist before I did anything and she ordered an additional MRI of my orbits. While lesions were found through my brain MRI, none of them were active but the subsequent one of the orbits did show the active one.

Did your eye doctor mention Optic Neuritis at all or give you color and visual field tests? Glad to hear you're calling the doctor. Please keep us posted!
