More than once a month would be a sign of trouble to me. Unless, of course, you are talking about taking it prophylactically before cardio, in which case, frequency would depend on how many times you jog, dance, etc.

My two year old takes it every four hours when he's sick. If that lasts more than two or so days, we move on to prednisone. Have you tried preventives? If you're talking about how much at one time...it can only open your airway so much, so don't keep taking it if it's not working, go to the doctor because you need another treatment.

If your child is taking so much albuterol and it's not helping, it is possible that she/he has a genetic variant that makes her/him not responsive to this drug. In the last few years, several studies have shown that individuals with a particular genetic variant actually get better when they stop using their albuterol (or salbutamol).
