View Full Version : Help - it's very complicated, but my husband is the one with a pre-existing condition

... and although I am a US citizen, he is not. We currently live in the UK and we want to go to the US for about 9 months while I'm on sabbatical. I will probably not be paid by a US institution but he will be able to work so he'll be looking for a job as soon as we get there.

He has diabetes and needs regular checkups and insulin - he must be able to get doctor's visits and prescriptions within a month of arriving as he'll only be able to get a month's worth of insulin to take with him. We had been advised to look at travel/work overseas insurance as these would cover non-residents but they all seem to exclude pre-existing conditions.

We'd be in CA and it seems there are some State insurance schemes for people who have been turned down by other schemes. I was previously a resident of CA and I think I could satisfy the residence requirements - but I wouldn't get turned down, it would be him!

I'm trying to get the institution which I'd be visiting to include me on their health plan, even if it means us paying - they have a variety of options including Blue Cross - but there don't seem to be any, even really expensive, options that would include pre-existing conditions, even though I am probably eligible to pay for most plans. Initially we'd have no US income but I'd still have my UK income so I don't think we'd be eligible on income grounds for anything like Medi-cal. It's not that we can't afford to pay for decent health insurance, I just can't seem to find any that he'd be eligible for!

This is one of the many problems with the US system. Insurance co's are virtually deciding who can or can't get medical care by refusing to accept pre-existing, and they also have the power to determine if something is "medically necessary".

Anyway, I'm thinking your husband would be better off staying behind in UK for the time being, because it seems no insurance co will take a pre-existing in this country. I take it he can't survive without medical care, so what else can you do? Or, if you have savings, pay everything yourself for the period of time.
