:blob_fire:blob_fireSOOOO This day has really sucked! I have a Excursion (limited, leather seats, desil...was in perfect condition and paid for) and tonight coming home I hit NOT one but TWO deer, TWO what is the chance in that??. AND they were BUCKS at that matter. There was 3 crossing and i took out 2 of them, well it was either hit them, or hit head on with a Semi! We are going to try to find them in the morning to see how big they were. I am SOOOOO upset over this. I had all 3 kids in the car and no one got hurt, my neck hurts a little but that is all. I think there is around $5000 in damage. This really bites, I love that car! It was very dark and we couldn't see them coming until it was too late. Nice huh? :blob_fire

Sharon..so happy no one got really hurt! That really stinks about the car as well. It was so lucky you weren't in some little Neon or Honda!
The deer are running everywhere right now in our little country town. I am surrounded by corn and soybean fields and this time of year, they are everywhere! It is breeding season for them. Hunting season started as well and so I am also surrounded by gunshots! I hate it. I love the deer but they are so dangerous. I just learned that they are actually attracted to headlights! I didn't know that. I always turn the brights on at night thinking it would scare them away...not so much!
We have had a few very close calls but haven't hit one yet thank goodness. Lots of accidents in the paper though.

HI Sharon. I can totally relate. Friday morning, on the way to work, my husband called me at 6am, he had just hit a deer too, and his truck is totalled.
BOTH OF YOU are lucky that no one was hurt. Trucks and nice Excursions can be fixed or replaced...the two of you, cant.
For the record, my husband had just gotten his truck fixed and paid off from the last time he hit a deer (about 4 months ago), last time it was only damaged, this time, its actually totalled!
No matter how upset I am about the money, Im thankful that he is okay...and Im happy to hear you are alright too.
Dont let the stress overwhelm you. Take it a step at a time and do what must be done to fix your beloved car.....and be thankful you arent in the hospital.
Hugs
Nikki

Did you get the meat?? There are, in Kansas, 3-10 fatalities and 9700 accidents involving deer. At least you came through it safely. It is rutting season and accidents are highest an hour before and after sunrise and sunset. While many claim deer whistles do not work, I will keep mine. At last count, Wildlife and Parks officials had 80 deer counted on the back of the family farm. MMmmmmm roast venison, Deer Chili, and Deer sticks/Jerky makes the holidays delicious!!

JayHawk - No we didn't get the meat, it was too late. We couldn't find them when we hit them. I found them both yesterday morning, well I found one and a half deer. LOL, One was an 8 point, half of is antlers were missing though and them yesterday afternoon on our way home and I had my hubby with me to show him someone had come along and 'cut' his antlers away...grose! The other deer was weird, we could only find parts of it, we know it was a male but that's about all. I guess I well I don't know! lol so no couldn't get the meat, it had been too long and wasn't cold enough at night to keep it at a safe temp, o'well!
Nikki ; for the record sweetie, I am most GRATEFUL that no one was hurt, especially my children and yes i know that my car can be replaced. My children are my life and they mean everything to me and i was most grateful they were not hurt, thought I needed to clear that up to you. Thanks for the hugs.
Tuckersmom - thank you! Yeah I know they are running all the time here and i here gun shots around here, so much so that the kids are not allowed outside at certain times cause the shots are heard so clost to the home! We too live out in the country. I have missed several this year and I still can't believe that I hit two :) it's crazy. Our band had a bake sale yeterday in town and ome hunters came by and I was joking with them, I told them that I had gotten 2 bucks the night before and they got all excited until I told then redneck stile! LOL
Thanks everyone for your concerns!

hi Lisa. Just for the record, he is right. It is rutting season! I had to learn that when I moved to hunting territory! Rutting, as I have been told, is basically mating season for the deer. Their hormones go wacky and they tend to realy "RUN" in all directions without thinking clearly and with no direction in mind...(typical men in heat)- sorry Jayhawk, had to throw that in there! But, it does happen twice a year here in NJ and it is proven that during this time, the accidents definately increase, due to "crazy deer" !
Hugs back, and Sharpaul, never had any doubt in my mind that you put your kids first and understand the importance of no one getting hurt. NEVER thought differently...just wanted to emphasize that after going thru this twice in less than 6 months, and now having to deal with a completely totalled car, who cares? Theres just too much more to worry about. As long as everyone is okay...thats all that matters~!
Have a wonderful weekend all. Lisa, Im off to go see the new movie about the magic shop with my stepkids!

Hardware stores and box stores like WalMart have deer whistles for six dollars that mount as pair on your front bumper with double sided tape. They really work.
It's always better to hit the deer than to swerve leading to loss of control. SUVs and trucks will flip leading to death or severe injury to those inside.

Rutting Season is when the bucks start herding up does into their personal harem. After the harem is established, then mating season begins. Running season is not far off because the females tend to run away until "caught" and put into the harem......

Jayhawk, thanks. Spoken like a true outdoorsmen. Thanks for the clarification. I was half right...your answer makes even more sense!
FYI, HIPSTERDOOFUS my husband totalled his truck with those sensors on it...this is the third accident (second in 4 months) where he has had a new set on the truck and still hit a deer!~ Here, in NJ, I know that no one really gives them much credence, as many people we know have invested in them with little success...maybe the deer here are dumber!
But thanks for pointing it out- the advice might help someone else!
Everyone, watch out for male deer looking for mates! Could be dangerous to your health, as if we dont have enough to worry about!

I thought ruNNing sounded right given the males are ruNNing after the does and they are ruNNing away!!!! Sooooo funny! Never heard of ruTTing season! Now I can speak with some intellegence about it. Good for a great laugh though.
We just got home from in-laws thanksgiving and the deer are everywhere with no intention to get out of the way! There were 3 standing in the drive..we are about 350ft. from road and they were almost blockading the
driveway!
Nikki - please let me know how movie was... thinking of taking
nieces/nephews to see it.
p.s. Just for the record!;p

Hi Lisa, happy early thanksgiving! Was the food at least good? The movie was cute...very much rated G. Not too exciting. My 8 year old loved it, my 12 year old loved the "fun scenes" my 17 year old hated it, and her father slept thru it....what does that tell you? It had a good story, alittle bit of a sad ending and of course the ever popular lesson to be learned. I wont tell you more if you are going to see it..but if the neices/nephews are under 12, its safe bet theyll enjoy it. (even if they dont quite get the lesson). I will say it was written well and with your sense of humor, you will enjoy it like I did- some of the one liners were hysterical! (but you had to be over 18 to catch them!) The acting was very good..it was very well cast.
look out for bambi.
