I am a 34 year old female. I woke up one morning, 3 years ago, and I had such pain in my legs, from hips to ankles, that I could barely walk. I had to have help getting out of bed in the morning due to the pain. It has persisted for 3 years, although, it dies down to a bare minimum, but never goes away, then comes back. It is now at full force again. Approximately 1 1/2 years later, pain in my arms started, from shoulders to finger tips, that has never gone away. About 1 year ago, I developed a mucous lump in my throat that I can not get rid of, I can not seem to cough it up, it just stays in my throat at all times. About 5 months ago, my back started to hurt very badly. And, around 2 months ago, I started getting very bad daily headaches. I wake up with "pins and needles" in my arms, no matter what position I was sleeping. The pain in my arms and legs feels like it is the bones, not the muscles. My joints stiffen up if I stay in any one position for too long. My hands hurt so bad it feels like someone is crushing them. In summary, I have severe pain in my legs, arms, hands, back, neck, headache, lump in throat, stiff joints, and pins and needles upon awakening. My doctor does not seem to think I have Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome because I do not have the signs of fatigue, depression or "brain fog". Although, he is suggesting MS or Lupus, or something of the such, only saying that a plethera of diseases and disorders have the same symptoms. I have been to see a neurologist and he did an MRI of my neck, only, and said that I had a bulging disc, not pinching any nerves. He did not feel it necessary to see me again. My doctor has run a gambit of bloodwork, all coming back within normal range. He has had me on pain medication for approximately 6 months now, I get a little relief from it, but not much. I would like to know if these symptoms sound familiar to anyone. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what tests should be run now or what things i could tell my doctor to check for? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I have been in pain much too long now. Thank you in advance for any help and suggestions. Michelle

I'm very sorry to hear about what is going on. I looked through some self-diagnosis charts (I'm sure you have too) and I could not find anything specific enough to suggest any one disorder. However, if your neurologist didn't find nerve trouble, and you say that this pain feels like it is in the bone, perhaps you should see an osteologist? Whatever it is it sounds quite uncommon, so you may want to get many opinions. The mucous in your throat...is it a sensation or are you sure it is actual mucous? It could possibly be Globus Sensation, a sensation of a lump in the throat which can be brought on by intense anxiety (over your condition?). You should ask your doctor about this as well. I feel for you and really think you should get some other opinions from other doctors. No one should have to go day to day with this type of pain. I wish you luck, and do reply when things get better.

Sometimes, regular medicine isn't the right thing. I suggest that you make a few visits to a message therapist and let them give you a full body message every three or four days. It can improve your overall circulation and stimulate your nerves which may bring relief.
Another good thing about massage therapy is that, even if it doesn't help you, it won't make things worse. It's also drug free.

Has the doctor ever done a thyroid test? Does the lump in your throat ever feel as if it's choking you?
Just curious....but a thyroid test is only bloodwork, so it would't hurt to go ahead and have him check it. But make sure he tests the T3, T4, and TSH as some doctors only test the TSH and it is possible for it to be normal while the other thyroid levels are off.
Hope you feel better soon.

Also along the non-conventional medicine route, I have been reading a book about Candida, and many of the symptoms you list are typical.

All of the symptoms you've listed sound just like me. Although mines been 4 years, with the most recent"attack" lasting about 7 months now. Mine started in my tail-bone and back of the thighs, now its my whole body, head to toe. I have had 2 MRI's of the lumbar region. Some mild disk degeneration, one minut tear in a disk. The doc says this wouldn't cause the pain. He gives me a script for pain pills and anti-inflamitories and says sometimes we just have to live with the pain. I'd like to see him get out of bed and go to work with this kind of pain. I have been to a pain mangement doc and 2 physical therapists and a chiropractor. Most of the time the things they do just seem to make the whole thing worse. But I keep hopeing I can find an answer. I've been searching web sites for information, browsing through symptom lists looking for a clue. I would be interested if you find out anything and I will let you know if I find anything. I don't have a regular e-mail address, I'm using my dad's while I take care of my mom while he is out of town. But I'll keep checking back here. Good luck! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif

Hi, just read all your messages....anyone ever tried Traditional Chinese Medicine (I think people will soon get bored of me on this site since it is all that I say!!!!).
The point being that if you've tried the more conventional methods in your own country you might want to consider trying the conventional methods from other countries - i.e. Traditional Chinese medicine is the conventional method of treatment in China.
The main reason I say this is that TCM is all based on the flow of Qi (loosely described as energy) and the balance between yin and yang (or specifically in the body this might be the balance between hot and cold, excess and deficiency, etc). Basically if the yin and yang components of the body get out of balance then the flow of Qi is effected. This can result in pain along the meridians (there are twelve main meridans - of which six run along the legs) and then further disbalances in the body. If the dis-balance is not corrected then further disbalances will occur.
Quite often you find when one type of approach has no effect - a totally different perspective can.
Hope you find the solution whatever the problem.
If you want anymore advice on TCM just ask and I'll try to answer them or put you in touch with a person who can.

Over the process of many years of complaints/symptoms and many docs and test, I have been diagnosed with CFIDS, Fibromyalgia, atypical connective tissue disease, hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia, allergies, high cholesterol, intermittent high blood pressure and somatization disorder (not somatoform disorder, please).
I have tested postive for Epstein Barr Virus, Cytomegalovirus and now Mycoplasma fermentans which is what I would suggest you be tested for.
Blood has to be sent to a speciality lab...a homeopathy doc is who noticed the "red crescents" on my throat when I complained about an ear ache which hurt when I swallowed.
Mycoplasma fermentans is a co-factor with people who have CFS, Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid arthritis, Aids and Gulf War Syndrome.
The treatment is antibiotics and other supplements for months to years.
Good luck.
