Hi
I've had hearing loss in my right ear for 6 months, and an ear infection. I've had antibiotics, sprays, and finally today a visit to the ear nose and throat hospital. I've also had on the same side, severe face pains, headaches, more migraines from the face pain, severe sore throats, shoulder and neck pains - and the doctor at ENT told me he can't see anything wrong and come back in 6 months if it's still painful and he'll give me a hearing aid (and how exactly will that cure the pain?). I'm absolutely astounded at the idiocy of the man. No referal, no notice taken of my jaw pain and head pains, headaches, sore throats..............just - "well i can't see any infection, goodbye"...............i've waited 6 months in the hope that this appointment will help clear it up. I'm gutted. His only response was - wait for it - "it's your age". I'm 56, and i may? have lost a little sharpness to my hearing in general over the years (i hadn't noticed until i went deaf in my right ear), but to tell me that having sudden hearing loss in one ear with an ear infection is due to my age (and the inference that i must just suffer), is the pinnacle of arrogance and laziness. Luckily i have a good dentist, who is going to send me to the dental hospital for treatment for tmj. She would not do this while i had an obvious ear infection. How many people must come away from so-called NHS specialists totally despairing (after all, you do believe that this is as good as you're going to get). How astounding and irresponsible that an NHS so-called specialist in ear, nose and throat ailments can't recognise/ knows nothing of tmj and hearing loss and has nothing more to offer for advice than an hearing aid in 6 months time?
God help us.

This is similar to my recent experience with an ENT. Got all the same rhetoric. It is my age and hearing loss is normal, etc. Good for you to try another way. With Pt my hearing is restored and now I know what to look for. I too thought it was an ear infection until it didnt respond to anti-biotics.

Hi, I've had a similar problem with my local NHS hospital in Hull. I saw their Maxillofacial Dept and was just told to live with my unbrearable 24/7 headaches and jaw ache that I've suffered for nearly 2 years as they did not provide TMJ treatment on the NHS.
I have seen a private doc who recommended a gelb splint followed by braces but really don't like the thought of shelling out thousands of pounds.
What NHS dental hospital have you been referred to as I am very interested to see if I can get NHS treatment and I see you're in North East England like me?
I really have lost all my faith in my local NHS trust so I know how frustrated you feel.
Hope you get fixed soon :-)

Dear all
Still waiting to get an appointment at the dental hospital in the hope that they can do something. Still distorted hearing in my right ear and pain which in my mind feels a bit like an injury to my eardrum, but all i have to go on is imagination.
What's laughable is that i also have foot problems which ALSO cannot be dealt with at my doctors because i'm not diabetic. What do they deal with? and as far as arthritis goes - live with it. I really do wonder what doctors are for any more.
I had a gel splint made two years ago but it doesn't help much, although i used to grind my teeth so it must help a bit.
Well, i hope you all find some ease. It's so frustrating being passed from pillar to post, shrugged shoulders, blank looks, and shaking heads......If WE know what it is why don't they?

Hello, I do hope you're feeling better. I too seem to have your same symptoms. I've been seeing an ENT for over 5 months, and he assures me that my symptoms are not TMJ related? I think he is wrong. I feel jaw pain that travels to my right ear, headaches, voice echo, and the worst is the robotic or synthesized hearing. I have been on 4 diff. antibiotics and nothing has changed. Does all this sound familiar?

Hello all UK sufferers.
Faceache233, ask your GP to refer you to your local Maxillofacial Department, your local hospital should have one. They are the ones that deal with TMJ here in the UK.
Miss Headache, hello not seen you around for a while, If I'm correct the nearest Dental hospital for us here in the North East is Leeds. I was seen by them a few times for dental treatment but because of the severity of my condition they were unable to help.
There is a new referal system within our NHS now where you get to choose where you receive treatment, you can choose to be treated by somebody that you've heard of our go with waiting times.
If you do an internet search you will find a good Maxillofacial consultant in West Yorkshire, he really is the best this side of the country.
Take care
Lorraine
