Hi Guys,

PCP's Ofc called and they want to redo my last round of blood tests. The only result mentioned was potasium (sp?). They said it was slightly elevated.

Does anyone here know if slightly elevated levels of potasium (sp?) can cause the twitching and charley horses?

I had a new muscle spasm over the weekend that involved the right side of my back up to the base of the skull and down to my right thumb.....

I also had a new sensation.....I was holding piece of paper in my left hand today and the left thumb felt like it was on fire where it was touching the paper. When I put the thumb to my face to see if it was hot..it wasn't it was cold....weird!

Thanks for reading.

If your elevated potassium levels are attribuable to an underlying condition, I think it's possible. I don't know all the reasons that high potassium levels can occur but I do know that it is associated with certain diseases. If they continue to be elevated, your doctor will likely (hopefully!) do additional testing to see if it's indicative of a disorder and/or if your kidneys are working properly.

The good news is that it seems like your doctor is on top of it by wanting to redo your blood work! Keep us posted!

Thanks for the reply Bearygood. Received the new rec for repeat test today. He is rerunning the potassium and has order creatinine as well.

I think they will be normal...will know in a week or so. Potassium may have been slightly elevated cause I LOVE bananas! I made sure to stay away from them for the last couple of days.

Thanks for reading.

You love bananas, huh? Well, how many do you eat a day, LOL? Lots of potatoes, too? ;)

I know a little bit about this because of my father, who lived for a long time iwth only one kidney. Had to be very careful about his potassium intake.

Good luck to you and please let us know!

LOL...Just 1 but I have not had one since last Thursday....just wondering...my daily vit has potassium as well...maybe I should stay away form the bananas. FYI I don't eat potatoes much do the have a lot of potassium as well? I thought that u purge excess potassium through the urine same as too much vit c?

Yes, they do. If we made anything with potatoes for my father, we'd actually have to leach them first (soak in cold water for a long period of time). I think that the danger for him was to not overload the kidney because he only had one. But by the same token, although I'm not sure what conditions elevated potassium levels might be an indicator of, it can absolutely correlate to how well the kidneys are working.

OK and how does kidney function relate to MS if at all? Sorry, I am still undiagnosed and although some of my test results have shown a little something....it is still considered normal and nothing adds up.

A high potassium level would not be an indicator of MS. However, it could be reason to suspect other things and while I don't know all of them without looking it up, I do know that Diabetes is one of them. lynxgal, sorry I don't remember what your sx are but there definitely MS type sx that can occur in Diabetes, for example, neuropathy. That said, it might not add up to anything or be the reason for what you're feeling but they're doing the right thing to recheck your levels so you should feel good about that. :)

OK Thanks BG. I didnt think it was related. Diabetes has been ruled out already. Thanks again.

Received a copy of the 2nd set of blood test results all normal as I expected they would be. I am glad that I am healthy on paper.
