Hi I've been having a ear problem for like 2 months now,My doc said it because My eustachian tube is blocked.I've had everything done to my ear, antibiotics, syringing, but still having this whooshing noise "Pulsatile tinnitus". Recently I'm having alot of new symptoms, cheek tightness, feeling of something in my throat,Headaches on a few occasions.Plus I've noticed when I open my Jaw my TMJ joint seems to make a grinding noise,It also seems to prutude alot more than my other joint on my left side. Also having popping in my sinus area.i'm feeling generally depressed with it all.

I've got another appt with my doc on thursday,And hopefully will get this sorted,Just want to ask if anyone else has had any of these symtoms.I really feel Like im going insane.

Thankyou

Hi There,

Firstly, your definately not going mad or crazy and its not in your head as some doctors lead us to believe!!

Quick history, i've been in agony since April.......went to bed healthy and woke up unable to move my head due to excruciating neck/shoulder pain! After visits to a Chiro, Physio, Ortho and a Neuro who have all done their fair share of tests i'm basically no further on!! The Chiro and Physio made me worse, the ortho found a bulge in my neck but not enough reason to cause the pain i was in and the Neuro told me i have an inflammatory process going on as i have now had 2 abnormal brain scans but he's still not been able to give me an actual diagnosis............I then, in total desperation looked up head, neck and face pain and up came TMJ! My symptoms are:

Neck/Shoulder pain (left side)
Ear Pain, Ringing in left ear, a feeling of fullness in ear
Pain in front and behind the ear
Temple pain
Head Pain
Cheek pain (left side)
Eye pain (left side)
Sinus pain (left side)
Tooth/Gum pain
Trouble Chewing and swallowing
Sore Throat

The pain i'm constantly in can be excruciating, i've not been able to work since July and basically right now my life is on hold! I also like you am sure the left side of my face stands out more than the right. I'm now seeing a Maxilliofacial consultant with regards to the TMJ and i'm hoping he'll be able to diagnose me and end my pain...............Fingers crossed hey!

I notice your from the UK, me 2! I'm in London, whereabouts are you?

Take good care

Thankyou sarah,If makes me feel better knowing others are going through similar symptoms.I'm from sussex,So not to far from you.

I know what u mean about your live on hold,I spend most of my time wondering what symptom will happen next.I've got 2 children to cope with aswell, thats why my mum is helping with lots of things..My hubby is fantastic aswell,Im constantly in tears. You just dont want to get out of bed and face another day in pain.I've got my docs appt tomorrow,So hopefully I will get further with a diagnosis. She is meant to be putting in a tube in my ear the one im having probs with aswell,But I'm going to ask her to feel my jaw because it seems this tmj is going right into my ear and it's grating.Plus my back teeth just dont feel right! This throat feeling is driving me nuts.

One triage nurse even laughed at me when I mentioned my jaw problem,I showed her this joint was bigger one side,Her answer to me was we are not symmetrical both sides!I left feeling really down once again.

I hope you get answers to hun,It would be nice to stay incontact to see what they say about your symptoms.
I wish you all the luck in the world.

Hey there,

Sussex isn't too far really, i'm based in Wembley, very near to the stadium!

All i can say to you is DON'T GIVE UP!! trust me i know that is easier said than done.................I've had it all from consultants just dismissing me to being told i need to have anti-depressants...........The only reason i'm so low is because i have no life and i'm in constant pain, DUH! I've just kept on going until i've now found 2 wonderful, understanding consultants who have promised me that they will get to the bottom of this!! Thats what i needed to hear!! So right now i'm under a neuro, a maxilliofacial surgeon and i'm soon going to see an ENT consultant!! You have to keep going til you have answers!! We at least deserve that!! They may be the specialists but we know our bodies better than anyone and my body is definately not right!! The problem i think also is that many doctors haven't even heard of a TMJ disorder so its not recognised, thats why its important to see someone who specialises in it! Believe me i have many days when i think i just can't cope with this pain anymore and i just want to give up but its not an option. It must be very hard for you with 2 kiddies to look after, how old are they?

I would love to stay in touch, we can keep each other posted on our latest news and hopefully our progress!! As you say its just good to know your not going mad and your certainly not alone!!

Speak soon
Take good care

Hi sarah

My kids are 11 and 9 years old!

I went to the docs yesterday who did some blood tests for TMJ,Waiting for them to come back and she is making me an appt with a neurologist.I'm off to see my dentist today with my symptoms,Just hope she can give me some answers.I was really scared as she said they might check for possible tumors. So ended up in tears again thinking I've got some horrible thing that can't be cured.

The thing is all this started with having 2 teeth pulled and one rebuilt last year"weak teeth after having the kids"On this side im having problems with.Plus I had a wisdom tooth extracted at 33 years old 5 weeks ago,My dentist said this wisdom tooth had 4 roots and was deformed this was same side top jaw .Seems so odd that all this started the same time.Plus i've noticed I cant move my jaw to the right side anymore.

Hopefully My dentist can take a look and just see If I can get some answers today!

I feel so depressed with it.

UPDATE
Just got back from my dentist ,she has comfirmed TMJ.Just had a splint made,Terrible sitting there with gunk in your mouth for the moldings,Plus pysiotherapy sessions will begin soon.Got to have my splint fitted on the 4th dec.She said it's so bad that I might even need surgery to correct it.My ear nerves have become trapped hence the noises I'm hearing. This tightness is my muscles going into spasm along my cheek. This has been made worse by my wisdom extraction.

Hey There,

Its really good that you obviously have a fantastic dentist who actually recognises TMJ. I really hope and pray that this is the turning point for you and now you can hopefully get some relief. Isn't it amazing that the Jaw can cause so much pain and that the pain radiates to the face, neck and even shoulders..........you just wouldn't think it hey!?

I know what you mean about convincing yourself that something awful must be going on........I do exactly the same, i think to myself if the pain is that bad it must be something big!! In my head i've had all sorts from having brain tumor to cancer.................Thing is because the docs can't give me an actual diagnosis i just make my on mind up and thats really not a good idea!

How are you feeling about it all now you've seen the dentist?

I truly hope we both get the treatment we deserve!!

Take good Care and speak soon.........

I know what u mean about self diagnosis,I was driving myself mad with thinking I had cancer or a tumor.Have you ever had any arm pain Sarah with your symptoms,I keep getting a very stiff shoulder and muscle pains in my arm aswell.
Have u seen a dentist aswell? Try and get as much opinions as possible. My last resort was my dentist,As my first symptom was ear problems,So naturally you go and see a doc.

I will keep in touch and hopefully you will get some sort of diagnosis soon.

two heads are better than one.

I will give you my msn address if you want so we can keep in touch and help each other through the rough times.

Hi there,

I've been through so many routes...................Chiro, Physio, Ortho, Neuro, Dentist, Maxilliofacial and now i'm being referred to an ENT consultant!! I'm still seeing the Neuro and Maxilliofacial consultants and they are both determined to sort me out!! Neuro has changed my drugs and the last few days i've been a little better so i'm hoping maybe they are helping, thing is i've been here before were i've had better days and then i get bad again so i'm just keeping my fingers crossed!!

My pain is very much in my face and neck and also does radiate down into my shoulder.............Its all on my left side!! It also at times feels like i have a toothache but i haven't and i also get a lot of ear pain, it kinda feels lke my ear is full! I also get a lot of ringing in that ear! Since all this happened my left arm is also weak!!

We must keep each other posted as like you say 2 heads are better than 1 and maybe together we will get somewhere!!

Have you only ever seen your dentist about this?

Take good care
