Happy Thanksgiving everyone;

I want to relay my prostate symptoms to the board and hopefully can find some good advice. About 5 years ago when I was 50, I had my first PSA test and it came back around 11 so my personal physician immediately referred me to an urologist; where upon he did a prostate biopsy which wasn't too bad; the results were negative. He did say however that my prostate was slightly enlarged and I had the symptoms of BPH or prostatitis. So I went on a four week regimen of an antibiotic; it did lower my Psa down to around 8. It stayed that way for a couple of years; still had urination frequency especially at night.
I also had an unusaul experience after imbibing at a XMAS party, around 5 drinks; later that night I coludn't void at all and went to the emegrency room where a catheter was inserted and had immediate relief. So, my urologist put me on Advodart for about a year and I don't think it helped that much but my PSA did lower to about 4.5 which was good; noiw he thinks I may have interstitial cystitis, so I'm to avoid caffiene, chocolate, citrus and acidic foodsand alcohol.
Well, last night at a Thanksgiving celebration I had about four drinks and I couldn't void again last night, so back to the emergency room and another catheter inserted. I am also taking flomax which does help somewhat. My qustion is has anybody else on this board shared the same symptoms I have; especially where one cannot urinate after a few drinks.
I haven't had the cystocopy procedure yet but I think I'm going to request one very soon. Thanks for any help.

This is a very interesting condition. It seems like the alcoholic beverages somehow are causing some sort of stricture. Very weird! In my opinion the cystoscope procedure is the perfect test for this condition, however, to duplicate the experience, you may need to have a few drinks before you go to the urologist and allow someone else to drive you to and from you visit.

Best wishes...

While probably not as severe as your symptoms, I previously had urgency, frequency and similar problems due to enlarged (72) prostate. Symptoms were caused by some but not all kinds of alcohol and coffee, depending on how it was made. Did not have any problems with chocolate or other kinds of liquids, other than drinking a lot late at night obviously.

Have recently greatly reduced coffee intake, and have switched to green tea and pomegranite juice which has helped greatly. Don't know how beneficial this might be for everyone, depending on the problem, but there's plenty of information on the general health advantages of both available online.
